I put down a lil creatures bright ale clone last night.

The recipe asked me to boil 3 litres of water and then add the cracked grain to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes then add the saaz and amarillo.


Now i think i might of ****** it. i think i should mashed? the grain for 30 minutes or was it more like steep the grain. then boil it with the wheat malt and light liquid malt extract?

Cause i ended up just cracking the grain and adding the wheat malt and LLME and then boiling it all together...


when i threw it in the fermentor it was very cloudy?

And i burnt my grain bag.
 
Dude you need to read some wikki topics first before you brew anything,you dont boil grains.

i guess that is one way of learning, if you haven't done so yet get on to how to brew by john palmer, its a good read.
 
Don't worry mate, you'll still have beer... it just might not be all that good. Anyway, one step at a time - heres my basic guide to brewing:

1: Cleanliness is your friend. Make sure everything you use to brew is CLEAN!
2: Extracts are easy to brew with - dump in, top up, add yeast. Done.
3: Grains provide depth to your brews. Steep overnight or simply let sit in 70'C tap water for 20 minutes. Strain, rinse then discard grain. Boil liquid, add to fermenter. Do not boil the actual grains, this will extract tannins and make the brew taste weird/bad/bitter.
4: Hops provide bitterness, flavour and aroma. Boil for 15~20min to give a bit of bitterness and flavour, 0~5 for aroma. Dry hopping also gives good flavour and aroma and is best done by adding dry hops to fermenter 2 to 5 days before bottling. I favour 2 to 3 days with 15~30g depending on hop and brew.
5: Make sure your temperatures are appropriate for the yeast you are using. Most ales do well in the 18~20'C region, most lagers in the 10~12'C region.
6: Make sure everything is clean. Really clean. Seriously... clean means your brew won't go bad and will taste good!

Thats about it for your basic brewing instructions.

you bet i will. I sample my ESB last night and yeah slightly water and bitter but meh i will get there.


I have ditched the lids now no stupid airlock for me now

I better go make my brownies too now
 
Those Brewcraft directions did for one of my first K+B brews too - who wrote them, and why do they think you can boil grains?
 
yeah there is a different grain taste to it. its getting worse with age to i think... i think i still have 20 bottles of it.
 
Fish mate, sorry to hear your brew aint quite up to scratch. I will tip beer in the blink of an eye if I'm not enjoying it.
But at risk of being shot, Isn't decoction boiling grains or should I lay off the turps tonight and post in the morning. (I have been told before lol Damn Wifey)
