To me it's the coming into the season of dark and malty brews and I've heard that Galena used late in the boil will give a bit of a black current aroma (perfect for the dark n malty).
So who's actually used it late in the boil for aroma?
How'd it go?

Can't say I've ever spotted a recipe with it used late in the boil ... yet

I've only ever used relatively low amounts late in the boil as it has a pretty high AA% (I think ?) and can't say I got any 'black currant' type aroma's or flavours from it. If you're specifically chasing Black currant I'd recommend 'Brambling cross'

Hi Mika - how late in the boil did you add the Galena and what do you reckon it added?
Cheers

Just checked one recipe file, 15 thru to 0 minutes inclusive. 10gms each time @ 5min intervals, so a bit more than I orginally thought
I personally never rated it that much. Was one of those hops that you see on Ross's list and 'accidentally' click on it as you're browsing thru.
I really can't remember/describe the aroma/flavours it imparts, but I wouldn't call it Balck Currant...more spicey, herbal kinda thing.

Galena is the hop of Corona. I would guess that they add the equivalent of 15g for a 23L brew at the beginning of the boil and that's the end of story. Don't think it's meant to be a late hop.

I recently made a Mexican Cerveza with Galaxy malt, rice and only 20 g of Chinook for bittering for 90 minutes, no further hops. It's turned out like the beer that Corona only thinks it is. Clean, surprisingly aromatic and Bloody drinkable. I've decided to make it my house lawn mower beer but will try Galena 20g next time instead of the Chinook.

Modern high alpha hops such as our own Pride of Ringwood were developed for start of boil bittering and if used as late hops can be a bit funky.

Wouldn't personally use Galena for late hopping, maybe Cascade instead.

Thanks Mika.
I noticed the comments on this hop on the craftbrewer website too which mentioned them as a finishing hop, just got me to wondering whether it was worth a bit of an experiment.

Haven't used galena, but certainly agree with Mika that if Blackcurrant is what you're after, bramling cross is definately the way to go.....I looove bramling cross. It works particularly well (imo) with the ester profile 1469 gives.
