So... I'm going to do a brew tomorrow after work, because I got my shipment of hops in the post today (thanks Yob, super quick!) and it included Kohatu.

Most google searches bring up the phrase 'sweaty pineapple pants', which is interesting. Other searches hint at pineapple and lime flavours, with slight piney resiny notes. I was thinking of doing a SMaSH to learn about the hops specifically, but I'm feeling more inclined to doing an IPA of sorts.

Has anyone used this yet? If so, what do you think of it?

I also got some Kohatu from Yob today ;) (free plug: hopdealzaustralia!)

Never used it before either..
I have a hoppy blonde planned for Friday using Amarillo, Motueka and Kohatu.

Very keen to try it out... (it smells yummy)

edit:speeling

Thinking of doing an IPA around 6% with Vienna and Pils, plus a little Wheat and Crystal, 60IBU bittered with Magnum, and flavour/aroma with Cluster and Kohatu. Might turn out shit, might not.

Brewdog do a kohatu single hopped ipa as part of their ip is dead series. Get your hands on one. Piney. I loved it.

I picked up some Kohatu from yob and had the exact same thought.

I brewed the following SMASH- but it is sitting in a cubed to be fermented at some stage in the future.

So yes I've brewed with it - but cant comment on how it tastes yet.

Kohatu has some promise, but you need to drive it hard hard hard. Load it all at 0 minutes, hopstand, whirlpool, cube or dry it. Anything earlier than 5 minutes is a waste of hops.

Now you tell me! Hahahha

I added 10gm of Kohatu and Cluster in the cube (that's the 0 min addition in my recipe) and I'll likely dry hop with 20gm of each too.

I got woody oak and redcurrants from Kohatu, very nice.

I had some kohatu summer ale or something, liquid wort a while back - its pretty decent, I think you'll like :).

Prob the beer that got me to switch to all grain.

Did a 23 litre batch of the Coopers Unreal ale and dry-hopped with 100 grams of kohatu pellets. Turned out to be a nice medium ale brew with a nice little back flavour of pineapple & lime. Will do this one again. The girls seemed to like it too - so a good one for all tastes.

Cheers,
Pete

Yeah, mine has been received well. I've been told by brewers and beer drinkers alike that it's a simple, easy drinking pale ale that's a little different - but enjoyable :)

I'm actually thinking about dry hopping my 'accidental Wheat Lager' with 75gm of Kohatu (read thread 'Oops... wrong yeast') in the AG Forum. Will keep you all updated - only kegged 30 mins ago.

After 2 weeks in the bottle the original pineapple/lime flavours have virtually disappeared. This was a 23 Litre batch that I dry-hopped with 100grams of kohatu. Probably could have used 200grams of kohatu or partnered with some Amarillo.

Cheers,

Pete
