In the spirit of using stuff for applications which it wasn't designed for, Kogan are today selling wireless floating pool thermometers for 25% off.

I've been toying with a wireless BBQ thermometer for remote mash temperature monitoring in my BIAB rig (saves taking the lid/blankets off and letting the heat out to check the temp). According to the specs of the pool thermometer, this thing maxes out at 60C so it's not going to be much good for that, floating in some wort though it could provide a more accurate reading than on the side or in the fridge thermometers. I dunno how solid it is or how easy it'll be to make sanitary, there's only a photo from a single side.

No affiliation, I haven't tried it yet, I'm just always looking to re-purpose gadgets for brewing fun.

Anyone got something similar? Short of the long dip tube down the bung approach, I'm not familiar with any other in-wort temperature measuring gadgets.

I bought a couple of items from Kogan recently and they have been pretty good quality. I know he got a slagging over at the DTV forum when he started off as some of his stuff and offers were dodgy, but he's come good by the looks of it.

Wow just think you could keep the display on the bedside table and check up on your batches during the night B)

I pinch one of my fridge STC-1000's for mash temps (purely as a thermometer - I don't use it to control the element). They're supposed to only be accurate to +/- 1deg but I haven't had any issues with attenuation so...

Just throw the rubber cord in? I have a spare STC1000 or two. Wasn't sure how the rubber would go at higher temps not incased in something though.

10°C ~ +50°C is the range,

No good for wort, which is a pity. My last thermometer in BNE, which seems to have gone missing, was about $15 for a probe digital type.

it's fine, I've left it in there a few times while ramping to boil.. to discover that the sensor cuts out at 99deg.

I recommend the wireless bbq thermometer, has temperature alarm, timer alarm and show F or C from bunnings for ~$25

Stainless steel food grade probe.

Just dont boil the probe, it aint like 100c for too long, but mash and ferment, no problem.

Unfortunately in my trials I find the BBQ meat thermometer reads around 10c over my LHBS bought one so I tend to not trust it.
