Anyone tried creating an IPA with a lager yeast or something similar, its something i havent heard much about before, and thought it'd be a decent topic to start, i myself like a hoppy lager and higher alcohol content in lagers also, so would like to know peoples thoughts and ideas...or links if this has been discussed b4 and i couldn't find it hehe

interesting idea, but with a lager yeast i think you would be narrowing your margin for error. whats that mean?
with a neutral ale yeast you're pretty well set. you might have esters or not, its not a big deal. you've got enough hop and malt character that they will basicaly dominate or perhaps compliment what your yeast is adding.
with a lager yeast, if fermentation gets away from you the yeast will distract from the rest of the beers character. and i cant think of one high abv pale lager that ive liked. they all come out like rocket fuel.

not saying it cant make a good or even great beer. and done well, it could be fantastic. im just not sure its worth taking the risk with a formula that is proven to work.
then again, i rarely take any risks with yeats. i still prefer dry ale yeast for 90% of my brews.

on the other hand...im drinking a pils right now that does have a delicate, soft malt and yeast character and i wonder how that would translate into what you are talking about. good luck if you try it.

Imperial Pilsner perhaps?
Bit less malt accentuation perhaps, but with hops smack bang in the face.

Never had a doppelbock, eisbock or baltic porter then?
pale lager. for some reason the dark ones seem to bring everything together much better. the smoothness from a baltic porter/dopplebock seems to go missing from the pale versions.
