Really? This is something I'm unaware of. I mean, if you lower the mash temp it may take a little longer to get full conversion, but if you make sure that you mash long enough, you should get the same efficiency as if you mashed higher. I'm aware that the different sugars have different molecular weights, but that is such a small effect that you can't actually measure the difference in OG with the sort of equipment we're using. Can you please explain how the mash temp affects OG?

No. not really, at all. You are absolutely correct
No idea where my head was or what i was thinking. Pre-second cup of coffee perhaps

Were you thinking of FG? Pretty sure mash temp affects that.
 
Wow, thanks to everyone who contributed here. I'm a long time drinker / first time brewer and I have just had very similar troubles as the original post describes. However, mine are more associated with "user error"
