Hi guys

Im having a little trouble working out the alcohol content of my beer. I always take the OG reading at the start before adding the yeast and I take the final reading at the end. I usually get a reading of 1030OG at the start and 1010FG at the end. Is my starting gravity too low to begin with? I thought it should be up around 1040 - 1045? I made a basic morgan golden sazz pilsner this time round. Can someone tell me if im correct or not.

Thanks

Reading is a little low my last Pils was 1040,try spinning your hydrometer & tap it a coulple of times to make sure their is no bubbles under it.

It's not a plastic Coopers one is it? If so, it may need to be calibrated. If so, go here

It was a kit morgan golden sazz pilsner using brew booster. My hydrometer is a glass one.

Does sound a bit low. Most kit beers that I've seen usually have an OG around 1.040, and it's pretty unlikely that a glass hydro would be out by 10 points. Having said that it can't hurt to check it. Put it into 20C water and see what it reads, should be 1.000.

Might be a silly question, but you are using the correct amount of water? Not too much?
