I only ask this as my father came over on the weekend and could not believe all the brewing gear I have got and how much beer stock's I had. He said that he cant understand it as I never much liked beer as a young fella and can't work out why I have turned into this crazy craft brewer. He never drank much and up until my darling wife (SWMBO) got me a Cooper Kit 5 or so years ago I would only drink a couple of cases a year.
But I would have been about 15 or 16 when I probably swiped a twist top from an esky at a party home. Never really liked beer that much until I started brewing it though. <_<

I remeber sipping the foam from my dad's glass as a nipper, and going down to the pub with him as a 12 year around a cycling event (Legal in Holland :p ). It was a real right of passage to get a Kleintje (thimble sized beer) and drink with the men! (not legal in Holland  )

me too. maybe 4 or 5yrs old :) Dad would pour a longneck and if he was a bit impatient and pour a big head on it he'd call me over and get me to drink some of the froth. eventually i started holding my breath and sneaking in the beer from under the head. when he realised he started pouring his beers slower

I started drinking beer in pubs when I was 16. Up to then I was strictly a wine drinker.

I distinctly remember being 6 or 7 and my dad pouring me a drizzle of VB into my yellow cup. I remember being fascinated with the fizzy, malty flavour.

It didn't kick off the love affair, though. Through my late teenage years I considered myself a "raver" and drinking alcohol was decidedly uncool amongst my friends.

It wasn't really until I was about 20-21 that I started really enjoying the stuff.

Would've been when I was about 9. I was invested into Scouts at a Jamborette, joined my patrol, and moved into the tent. Out came, what I remember, a **** load of slabs of Export Lite... that dodgy supermarket beer.
One sip and I gave the can to a mate...

Many years pass...

Didn't touch beer again till my 1st year as an apprentice sparky... went to the pub and ordered what I heard a mate order... at least what I thought he said.... "Shkooer e NYOO".

It was all downhill from there.

I had a few beers with some mates when I was about 12 and was sick afterwards. This put me off beer for a few years but I started again when I was around 16

dunno - cant remember. Apparently you cant remember anything from ages 0-2 years :p

I don't remember my first beer....

Apparently my folks went to a party when I was 2 years old and left me to run around on my own.

I must have been thirsty and downed a glass of beer left unattended on a table. I ended up a drunken toddler and was for a short time the life of the party before my embarrassed parents had to take me home....

But that aside.... the first beer I ever enjoyed was when I was 15 and visited my dad who lives in Germany. It was a bottle conditioned Weissbier and I WISH I knew the brand. It had a blue and white label.... My dad would always mix up the yeast to make the glass cloudy, and this beer always had a great foamy head.

I sent my dad a sample of Aussie beers when I came back to OZ... VB, Fosters, Carlton Draught, XXXX etc etc.... He must have thought all Aussie beers were completely s&*thouse! lol.

I have pictures of me as a 3 year old on dad's lap drinkin' from his stubby. Now i give a little bit to all my little nephews and neices etc. i love watching them react to the bitterness then go for just "one more" sip. gotta be awful diligent about not letting them have more than a few sips tho, can't be good to get a 3 year old drunk...

This one maybe.

Hey, you should send your Dad one of your beers now. :D

I'd be allowed to have a glass of wine cut with water at special dinners as a kid. But the first time I remember feeling some effect from alcohol was when I was 13 or so, drinking cider at the end of hay time. The first time with beer was a night to forget when I was 16, going to the pub with my mates. <_<

dont remember my first beer, but from the time I was 12 I was allowed to 1 beer on xmas day and special occations. come 16 and I was buying beer and liquor from bottleshops for all my mates who were older.

Was pretty much just a normal teenager. Started homebrewing when I was 17 with a mate cause we couldnt afford to always beer and good spirits. but that was when you couldnt buy anything but coopers homebrew and table sugar was as good a fermentable as you could get.

Thanks for helping with the pic Stuster.... This may well have been the first beer I liked! Cant be sure though as after 17 years I don't remember the bottle too well, and the labelling has probably changed.

Although, 'Bayern' where this beer is from is right where my father lived!

Is this beer readily available in OZ? I'd like to try it and see if it triggers a memory....

I was another late starter. Neither of my folks drank at home at all.My dad is allergic to alcohol... makes him very sick (and not in the usual way) so there was never anything alcoholic in the house when I was growing up. When I got to uni I got into cider (I know.. the shame) then wine and only drifted gradually into beer. I was probably 20 when I had a first beer.

I was lucky.. my sister got to uni and got into spirits. Damn near ended up in hospital a couple of times till she settled down.

Nowdays I let the kids have a sip whenever we have something. When they are a bit older they can have watered wine on special occasions (I figure 6 is still a bit young for more than a sip). Teach them appreciation and respect for a good drink early and hopefully they won't go crazy when they get older. If I let them drink a bit at home as they grow up they might be less likely to go out and get hammered at parties as it isn't forbidden....

Cheers
Dave

Definitely available. All reasonable bottle shops will have this one. There are plenty of German and Belgian beers around, but try getting an English brown ale. ;)

No shame in cider, Airgead. Just in that fake, yellow stuff Strongbow etc label as cider. A real cider is delicious. :super:

Edit: Oops, sorry to all Strongbow drinkers who may be offended by this comment.

First time I tasted beer? A sip of Dad's VB when i was 9, that put a halt to things fast.

First whole beer I had was a pint of CPA from the good old Adelaide Unibar, I would've been just 16 I think.

Strongbow is a perry, not a cider :)

phatties? ;) nothing better than a beer with ur bickies mate ;)

I remember being 3 or 4 we used to go down Sorrento (vic) forshore every year for holidays with the extended family...cousins, aunty's, uncles.

Anyways my dad and his mate Rusell used to go snapper fishing off mud island in his boat and then stop back VIA the old forte on mud island and get loads of mussel's to throw on the barbie...All the adults used to grab beers and chairs and setup shop for the night on the foreshore park. So i remember my first tatse being a Carlton Light in those old white and green can's. I thought it was sooooo bitter but still went back for more..

Fastforward to when i was 14 and mum was a FULL blown alco - 2 casks of wine per day, us kids would get home from school and she'd be passed out on the couch or way too wasted to cook.

If you watch alco's for long enuff it avtually deter's you from drinking...

Until i was 16 getting absolutley spastic in parks and at train stations on southern, wine and tooheys red blocks...

Then now today where i have one or two a night for the FLAVOUR and not to get drunk.

My dad was a social drinker and when I was about six he let me have the odd sip, I've been trying to make that beer with the familiar hop bitterness and Co2 prickle on my tongue. I'ts become an ambition to try and recreate it. The closest thing I can get so far is using S-189 yeast in a lager.
