As topic asks - how can I tell (aside from weight)? I don't want to move the keg and stir up any crap inside (it's just nice and clear now!).

Cheers -Mike

The easiest way is to pull the keg out of the fridge for a few minutes and condensation will form on the side... just move it carefully so you dont stir it up.

Yeah, it's out right now doing that. Wondered if there was any other way - apart from installing a sight glass.

Cheers - Mike

I drop mine on the bathroom scales. A corny has a tare of 4.5Kg

Get some 1-wire weight/load sensors and make a base for your kegs.
Take a reading of the keg empty (pre-fil).
Take another reading after filling the keg.
Set them up to a datalogger to record weights.
When the weight gets close to the pre-fil reading, it is almost empty :p

or

Take it out of the fridge for a few mins.

or

Know that when the beer is tasting its best and you are really enjoying it, that there is half a pint left :p

in the coal mine we had square air bags used for lifting machines. I had always thought that if I put a few PSI in an air bag then sat a keg on it in the fridge it would go up a few PSI then as i drank the beer it would go back to where I had set it at the start ... This is just an idea I had ,, in theory it would work. something like the old air bell at the service station...
cheers :)

Nice idea, but the pressure would also go up and down each time you opened the fridge and changed the temperature inside. Maybe if we extended Docs system to log temperature and pressure in the bag we could calculate back to beer remaining.

There is one more option.
A flowmeter in the beer line that measures that liquid that has passed. Reset whenever a keg is put online it will then tell you how much beer has been poured.
I have a flowmeter arriving in the next day or so for a project that will use some of this logic; but not for home.

Just what I've been thinking of using Doc. It's a case of finding one though, that's cheap enougth to buy 10 of... ;)

cheers Ross

Yeah, only on my second full keg, but it's tasting rather good - and feeling pretty empty. The last one was fantastic over the last 6 glasses - clear as crystal.

So I gather a few people have this problem then!

Cheers - Mike

Wouldn't tapping on the side of the keg indicate the depth of liquid, the same as knocking on a rainwater tank?

(You know... the tone "dulls" when you have reached the liquid)

[Edit: ****. Just tested this theory. Guess I will be changing kegs over this weekend :p

Seems to work.

Bulkbuy :super:

When the tap goes pshhht, the keg is empty. Never fails.

All you really need is an ultrasonic level detector, powered by 24VDC (or supply of your choice) and feeds you a 4-20mA scaled signal, hook it up to your multimeter and away you go. 20mA - Full, Close to 4mA - Time to brew another.
I'm as helpful as Doc :D
