Hi,Im thinking of doing a brew using Galaxy and Nelson sauvign, wondering how to go about it.Should I use Galaxy for bittering?or split them 50-50 thruout the recipe. There is a recipe about by Katie called Planet of the Grapes but be damned if I can find it. God that galaxy smells wonderful. regards

The big tip here is not to use equal or large amounts of NS. Having used NS before, it can dominate flavour aroma wise if not used sparingly.

Agreed. I would use NS for bittering only and Galaxy for flaour/aroma based on past experience.

Both big Alpha Hops, use in equal IBU amounts if you want, think I would use a mix for bittering and NS late. As BYB says NS can easily dominate, it's a great hop but use it sparingly.

Nah, bollocks.

If you're after a summer beer with lots of fruity aroma, Planet of the Grapes is the way to go. I've just blown a keg of it, and I'll be re-brewing it again this weekend. A few brewers on here can testify that this was a wonderful drop. The comments above about dominating are only valid if you don't want a lot of fruity aromas. PotG is a smack-in-the-face of passionfruit and grapefruit. A great way to experience these hops, and just gorgeous in the heat. I can't imagine wanting to use Galaxy sparingly at all - over the top is wonderful, and the NS backs it up nicely.

IIRC, it's 6g of each at 60, 20, 5, and 0, a Maris Otter base with a little acidulated malt (AG in case that's not obvious, but could likely be replicated otherwise). I'll send you the recipe that Katie sent me if you want.

I love both NS and Galaxy. So don't get me wrong on either account. I have mad a straight Galaxy and a straight NS. Have also combine NS with Amarillo lovely as well. If the original poster wants an aroma hit the NS will dominate if used in larger quantities compared to galaxy. IMHO it just seems a waste of a good hop like galaxy just for bittering. But hey each to their own. Not trying to get into a pissing contest at all :(

BYB

BTW can someone drop me the recipe for that PotG.

Id appreciate that recipe of katies, thanks for that.

I brewed a commercial batch of a "New World " Bitter that used a Nels Sauv / Galaxy combo.... turned out lovely...

The hop schedule should be dependent on the grain bill...
... having said that, I would use Nels Sauv for the bittering (great bittering hop) and a combo for the final additions.
I wouldn't worry too much about the Nels Sauv dominating, Galaxy is no wall flower hop.

dont have the recipe with me atm but just brewed a galazy/ns beer. bottled half las tweekend and tastes/smells great so far. will report more once its carbed up.

Pretty sure I tried that beer, and it was pretty good. I have a personal pref for SuperAlpha or Galaxy over NS. But love late additions of NF in summer quaffers.

Well personally if that is the right amounts I'd regard that as already using them sparingly...
12g* 4 additions is only 48 g of hops... Are you sure that's right?

I just used a whole pack of Galaxy in an IPA, 40g of it late, with some Summer Saaz.
I've used as much as 50g of NS total for the late additions.
BUT, it's not to everyone's taste.

With both of these hops you have to decide what you want. A big hit of the the flavour or a more restrained and adjust accordingly.

I agree with Beersom, Ive made quite a few all galaxy ales and NS ales and think that there is no way NS will dominate galaxy if added in even amounts. Galaxy is a very ballsy hop, more so than NS.

cheers

I brewed an anzac ale that was 2/3 sauvin to galaxy and the sauvin was definately the most dominant hop for the first couple of months, only after about 3 months or so in the bottle did the galaxy start coming through more...

I reckon if you went half and half the sauvin will stick out alot more!

I'd like to see the recipe too, can someone post it here or pm it to me please?
