I'm back!

Brewing and talking about brewing has really been pushed out of my life for the last few months unfortunatley, but I'm still alive.

I moved hell and high water to get along to the Melbourne Brewers Steinbier brewing / camping / scorching rocks spectacular last month, which was without a doubt the most fun I've ever had either camping or brewing. Thanks to the MB guys (particularly Hans) for all the hard work that goes into that - it really is something every brewer should see (and smell) at least once in their lifetime, and it has lit a fire under me to get brewing again.

Still haven't dusted off the grain setup, maybe in a couple of weeks (if I can remember what I'm supposed to do with it), but last week I put 6 kit brews down in a hurry so that I can fill each tap on my new (still being finished) mobile chest-freezer-trailer-bar-beer-thingy when I go camping with friends over Easter. All are kit & malt or double kits so they should scrub up OK.

If anyone is interested this is what I'll have:

"Midland Mild Ale", OG 1038
"Irish Stout", OG 1050
"Yukon Smoked Brown Ale", OG 1048
"Belgian ale", OG 1045
"Spicy Ghost" (pseudo-wit), OG 1043
"Bavarian Lager", OG 1046.

As for the stainless conicals, sorry for the teasing and the delays, they are on hold at the moment but hopefully soon to be re-animated. I've got a couple of grand's worth of fittings and materials sitting here doing nothing so I'm dead keen to start building them. Me Mate Glyn who will be doing the welding has nearly got a workshop set up in his new place, and he's 2 weeks away from being a dad so I reckon within a month he'll be desperate to be spending as much time in his shed as he can!

Anyhow, just thought I'd say hi.

Did you all miss me?

missed your sexy stainless photos WG, welcome back.

Welcome back also WG, I also missed your brewing porn photos.
How about a photo of this :) : Quote 'I can fill each tap on my new (still being finished) mobile chest-freezer-trailer-bar-beer-thingy when I go camping with friends over Easter'.

Welcome back... rumour has it you suffered a fair bit on the Steinbrew weekend ;)

Looking forward to the photos of the mobile chest-freezer-trailer-bar-beer-thingy!

G'day NRB - yes, I made a spectacle of myself I'm afraid. I haven't got out much recently, and I was so excited to be camping in the forest with good folks and good beer that I got a bit carried away.

I was wee willie winkie for Friday night, dropping in on complete strangers to spread the cheer, playing the guitar and everything. Bad idea. Unfortunately by the time I'm drunk enough to sing in public, I'm too drunk to hold any kind of a tune or even strum the right chords.

Of course, most of the folks didn't turn up until Saturday by which time I was a little past my prime...

Ok, beery-freezery thing:

It holds 5 normal cornies and a shorty over the compressor. It will be my main serving rig but set up to also be mobile on the trailer. The trailer will have fold-down tables on either side which will form a bar, with a rubber-backed bar runner sitting under the taps to look good and soak up drips.

Still waiting on a topcoat (silver hammerite) and plumbing (all here waiting to go).

I'll put some latches on the front to hold the lid down tight when it is on the trailer.

I screwed up drilling the freezer, my approach was to remove the trim and dig out all the insulation so I could see where the cooling lines were. I did this for the centre 4 taps, no problems, then decided to go for 6 taps. In a fit of laziness and 'she'll be right' mentality I decided just to follow the same line without checking first. Pffffft. Idiot. The cursing - I made my own blood run cold, I tell you.

Fortunately it is an older freezer and the coils are copper, so I cut out a section of the steel skin to clear the area and took it round to a commercial refrigeration place who did a backyard repair and regas for me for $50. It works beautifully now!

Expanding foam and automotive bog (and a bit of fibreglass where the old switches were, bottom-right) complete the bodywork.

I've tried running it with my El Cheap generator and after a tricky startup it runs fine. I'm hoping that when camping I can just run the generator for 30 mins or so, once or twixce a day, just to chill it back down again.

Here is a pic showing the removed trim and insulation. I used some PVC pipe to act as spacers and so that the replacement foam wouldn't stick to the tap shanks:

It's been 2 years now for me! :(

I'll be ordering all my shiny new gear while I'm in the states though, and hope to be brewing again before '07.
