Well here I am all most ready to start weighing my grain and ingredients. The recipe I have decided to go with is from John J. Palmers how to brew book, the recipe is an indian pale ale that he calls "Victory and Chaos" Now I bought enough ingredients to do quite a lot of brews and a few different recipes. I did'nt get the hops recommended in the recipe because I forgot to order them, but I did order 80gm of Amarillo and a few others but have decided to do an all Amarillo IPA which I have heard is not a bad option?

Anyways I did'nt want to create a recipe for my first BIAB but I guess I kind of have. All the other recipe ingredients are the same except the Crystal 20L which I have substituted with Carahell all my ingredients have gone through the brew mate software and I have managed to get the same total of 59 IBU's.

19lt All Amarillo IPA

Grain Bill:

4.5kg Pale Ale Malt
.227kg Carahell
.227kg Munich 1

Hop Bill:

32.9g Amarillo 60 mins
29.1g Amarillo 20 mins
12.7g Amarillo 5 mins

Misc Bill:

2gm Calcium chloride
2gm Gypsum
1gm Irish moss

Yeast:

liquid Whitebread Ale

Well please let me know what you think? I assume this would not be a bad brew to start with.

Looks ok , bloke...
Brew it and let us know how you went...
You could always dry hop some hops too , if your really after that massive IPA hop hit...
I will say i love Amarillo but i have heard some say the current crop isn't as good as the '09 crop
Good luck !
Oh and apprently i'm supposed to sat "pictures" or it never happened
Cheers

Thanks, I have been thinking about dry hoping, would you recommend leaving the 5 minute out and dry hop that? I had heard about the Amarillo also lucky I don't really know much about how its meant to taste I will just have to wait and see, I guess maybe more hops might help??

looks good I wouldnt worry about the .something lol got 33g, 30 and 15 might put it up 1IBU.

Id prob go 30g for 60 and bump the 5min up so you get more flavour and aroma go to 20g or more if you like or just dry hop but ether way what you have will be a great beer anyway.

ha whoops, yeah I was going to round my numbers out before I posted that as my scales only go in 1 gram increments anyways. I would prefer more hops so I will take your advice.

I agree with kelby for what it's worth, an IPA needs lots of hop flavour and bitterness, at the minute your a bit underdone late in the boil, add more if you can :beerbang:

Well first mistake made, I put the bloody first batch of hops in the mash, man its like having *** for the first time you just get nervous and then mess **** up lol anyways so i am now thinking of using some Galaxy hops for the 60 minute addition going with 15gm? I dont have enough Amarillo now!! I noticed you can hop your mash so I adjusted that part in the brew mate software.

Should I use another hop than galaxy? and should I use the galaxy for the full boil or later and use the amarillo?

I have some chinook, saaz, pride of ring wood, and perle. errghhh.. EDIT: I also have goldings

Proposed hop plan now:

Mash: 30gm Amarillo
60 mins 15gm galaxy
20 mins 30gm Amarillo
5 mins 20gm Amarillo

Personally I would do the Galaxy Late, the bitterness can be a bit harsh at 60, plus Amarillo and galaxy late has just made my mouth water :icon_drool2:

i remember my first SMASH with galaxy...it was like someone swapped my ballgag with a passionfruit, then stuffed passionfruit leaves up my...nose

other than that, hope the rest of the day went well for you chef

Yeah not to bad kyamba, few issues, but for a first go I'm sure it will be ok, man not wrong bout the Galaxy jez they are fruity as...

This is my second crack at BIAB i am making a Bohemian Pilsener. Beta rest 60 deg 30 mins and Alpha rest 70 deg 30 mins hit temps and no loss..!

And yes its ok to laugh :p , this will double as my cooling unit, I have raw water from the channel and last time I put the keg into the chilling device I ran the raw water in by the garden hose, it took 20mins to get from 100 deg to 20 deg. I put a towel that i soaked in sainitiser over the opening of the keggle to ensure no nasties got in.. lol

What about getting a pizza tray to use as your lid ? You can easily make a handle out of pine or some soft wood or some ali bent to suit . or a cupboard handle....and it'll be a bit better than a wet towel...
Otherwise well done !
