So I was chatting to a mate of mine recently, and was boasting that I could clone any just about any micro-brew he could throw at me... So he put out a challenge: The Dogfish head & Epic brewery collaboration Portamarillo. Ouch. That's a tough one.

From what I remember from drinking it, it was very smokey, warm on the nose, hoppy, roasty, yet quite thin and a bit sweet.

INGREDIENTS
Malt - Pale Ale, Crystal, Chocolate, Black, Roast Barley
Hops - NZ Southern Cross
Fruit - NZ Tamarillo
Smoke - Pohutukawa wood

Alc/Vol - 7.0%
IBU - 50
Style - Smoke Tamarillo Porter

500ml bottle - 2.8 standard drinks

FLAVOURS & AROMAS
Smoke
Chocolate
Coffee
Sweet fruit (Tamarillo)

So the question is: Can it be cloned?

I'm not much of a fan of smokey beers, but it is certainly an interesting beer.

I only got to watch about 5 episodes on foxtel. Was there more? And how do I get a job there?
 
There is one more episode called 3 beers for batali. Not shown in the US yet.

I've knocked up a recipe...just need to figure out how to export recipes to text files in beersmith 2 now.... :blink:

EDIT: Turns out tamarillo's arent in season until summer / early autumn anyway. I might have to put this one onto the 'to brew' folder for a while
 
Tried one a month back. Tasted pretty dry for a dark beer so I would be aiming for a low FG.

Wasn't all that impressed with it though. Might have been because I tried Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout straight after. Now that is a beer worth cloning!

First of all ask him to provide you with a sixer so that you can thoroughly evaluate the grains, hops, yeast and specialty ingredient. :p

Whilst this might sound like being a smart arse, the guys doing "Can You Brew It" would certainly do something similiar. Especially for such a specialty beer. Besides you need to drink one beside the clone. :D B)

"The beer is a Tamarillo & Pohutakawa Smoked Porter - A collaboration, a Festive brew and the world's first tree tomato beer. A sorta-Porter fermented with New Zealand grown Tamarillos, which were smoked using wood chips from the sacred Pohutakawa tree (also know as the NZ Christmas tree).

Portamarillo was brewed with five types of malt (pale ale, crystal, chocolate, black, and roast barley), New Zealand Southern Cross hops, New Zealand Tamarillo fruits smoked over native Pohutukawa wood."

Some pretty special, and hard to obtain, ingredients. Let alone processes.

I saw that episode when I was in the 'States and thought, tamarillos in beer? WTF?

Yuk. But at least the NZer didn't try to make kiwifruit beer, we can thank him for that.

That episode looked to me more like one of those "fusion" cooking shows, where they make Dog Bolognaise - Korean and Italian food, finally the two combined!

A band called the Bloodhound Gang have a song called "Kiss Me Where it Smells Funny". That's what Tamarillos taste like.
