my wife brought me 2 tins of farmland kits (from coles), 1 lager, 1 draught, she said they were on the clearance table and they were VERY cheap, they have long use by dates so they must be part of the getting rid of homebrew program

so the point of the post is.... what should i do with them? (please don't say doorstops)

can these kits be made into drinkable beer?, any tips on mixing them up?, i'd considered a toucan, being different sorts can they be mixed?

I've got a few Muntons ones that are doorstops right now. Happy to pass them on if anyone wants them - Eastern Sydney.

Toucan brew maybe with a bit of crystal and hops might be the way to go?

Toucan with 500g of DryME or wheat DryME

and some hops of choice for flavour

20g Galaxy@30 mins
10g Galaxy@10 mins
15g Amarillo@10 mins

Will give an awesome American IPA 23litres using US 05 yeast.

dryhop another 20g after 4 days for aroma.

Toucan'ing it will be fine, they are just named differently to try and display the style of beer they may make (according to hops already added (if any), and the original grain bill) ...but being Farmland brand just think of it as 2 cans of mediocre wort which you could do some pretty good things with if you add a few nice hops! Perhaps using a commercial yeast will have a pretty significant benefit.

You know its funny... I picked up 3 of these today (farmland draught) for 3 fiddy each, purely to use for yeast starters.

Then I thought, hey Toucan!!

$7 brew for ***** and giggles

Do it... Have had lots of success with Toucans in the past

This is what I have decided to do. Simple, 2 cans, hot water, 500g of dex, and do a simple hop boil (late additions only) of an english type hop (EKG, Fuggles) ferment at or near 18 deg with Saf 04. Wicked genuine $10 brew... (inc hops)

TOUCAN.....DOOOOOOOO IT!!!

I stumbled across two farmland draughts some time ago, $1 each....they were clearing out the entire homebrew range.....

So I did a toucan....it was pretty bitter...shall I rephrase that...FREAKIN bitter...but after a few months it mellowed and it was fantastic. Brewed a ruby red colour too. Cant say it was my preferred type of beer, but it was a good beer. I still have some bottles (about 1.5 years old now) and I have one every so often. Just gets better each time.

At least that way u will have a toucan under ur belt.

rendo

EDIT....I also think I added 1kg or maybe 500g of dex and 25g of cluster hops 20min boil :) ...no wonder it was bitter...and potent...like really potent!! from memory about 7% give or take a little. I'd say ditch the extra dex, u dont need it, maybe add some hops...anyway, some good suggestions from the others here....just DO IT

ok.... toucan it is :)

now changing the yeast to S-04 is a good idea yes?

and hops, iv'e never added any before, what sort and how much, and where do i get it from, local homebrew shop?

S-04 works quite well with UK hops

US-05 is very easy going yeast with no real style but works well with US hops or anything that takes your fancy.

Hit up some of the supporting sites or your lhbs and read the descriptions. Cascade is popular at the moment

i live close to the ballarat HBS, iv'e been buying FWK's there, i'm quite sure they have hops there

now what hops to add, i done a amarillo ale and it was very nice, would this suit ok

now for a stupid question, what effect will the hops have on the brew? and here's the kicker, how do you add it?

iv'e been searching the site for info/ideas, but i keep getting sidetracked and haven't stumbled across this info yet, so much good info here

I'd got one of the farmland lagers for make yeast starter, and must I say was pleasantly suprised when I tasted the resulting beer it was quite nice very bright aussie lager, the yeast I was building up was WYeast 2206 Bavarian Lager was just like drinking a commercial megaswill. I'd go for a 2can lager with a decent yeast. be great for when your non HBing mates drop in or after mowing the lawn

Hey Dave,

This is roughly how hops work...

Hops contain a certain percentage of alpha acids, these get released into the beer to give you bitterness, flavour and aroma.

In general, for bitterness you use a hop with a high alpha acid percentage (but you don't have to) and have to boil the hops in a solution of water and sugar (1 can of the lager or draught kit, dex, LME, DME, whatever... it just needs a bit of gravity).

As a general rule you:
- boil the hops for 45 - 90 mintues to attain bittnerness with little aroma or flavour,
- boil the hops for 15 to 45 minutes to attain flavour with some bitterness and aroma,
- boil the hops for 0 to 15 mintues for aroma and some flavour and little bitterness.

You can simply buy 100g in pellet form of a hop or 2 that you like (HBS will give good advice to suit a style) which will cost you about $10/100g.

When you have your water/sugar solution boiling, add in a desired amount (I find that a tablespoon of pellets is about 10g...probably a little less than 10g) and boil for the desired time. For your toucan, I would keep it simple and maybe go for some kind of american ale.

As mentioned above Cascade is a winner at the moment so lets go with something like this...

1. Get your water/sugar solution boiling in a pot (rolling boil), make sure it doesn't foam over. (I use about 3 L of water...)
2. Add in 15g Cascade hops @ 20 mins (Flavour with some aroma)
3. Add in 15g Cascade hops @ 10 mins (Aroma with some flavour)
4. Add in 10g Cascade hops @ 0 mins (Mainly aroma)

The minutes pretty much mean that once the first batch of hops go in, they need to be in for 20 mins etc. So once the solution (wort) is boiling, add in the hops (2.)...wait 10 mins and add in the next set of hops (3.) wait 10 mins and turn the stove off...add in the final set of hops (4.).

From here let this hopped up wort cool down by placing the pot in a sink of cold water and draining the water ever 10 mins or so.

Once it is cooled sufficiently, poor it into your fermenter along with your 2 cans of goo, top to 23 L and sprinkly yeast ontop (id go with s-05 but it's up to you :))

***If this all sounds too hard, or you aren't ready to hop like this, you can buy 'teabags' from all homebrew stores. These are pre-measured amounts of hops and cost about $4/ 12-15g...you simply boil some water in the kettle, fill a mug, chuck the 'teabag' in the water...wait for 10 or 15 mins, then add the bag and water into your fermenter. If you want to do it this way, just buy 2 or 3 'teabags' of Cascade, put 2 in boiling water for 15 mins, add to fermenter and then put another one into the fermenter 'dry' after a few days (give a lot of aroma)***

Try and keep your ferment temps at around 18-20 degrees! This will help a lot.

Once it finished fermenting, wait another week.

Then bottle :)

Remember though, it's your beer, and I don't know what you like or don't like! So do what makes you happy/ allows you to learn/ makes a decent beer.

All the best!

Ahhh thats how yoiu speel itt. No wonder I could't find anything on how to mix up my 2 cans also. my search of double cans, 2 brews etc etc.... nada

Now I'm inspired to just toucan it with what I've got.

1 can Farmland Lager
1 can Farmland Draught
20g Cascade @ 20min
US05 yeast
Dry hop with 30g Galaxy Flowers.

(At the minimum it'll get my stocks up as I keep wanting to drink it all too soon)

Sounds pretty good to me :) I think letting those yeast take thier time to a) ferment, and B ) clean up after themselves, is quite important when using the lower grade tins.

Reckon I need some DME or the like? Not after too much Alc. (~5%)

Good advice MLP,
No need for DME mudd, two cans should get you about 5.5 in the bottle (assuming 23L volume)

That's completely up to you, but the 2 cans will probably be pegging about 5% and over by the time you've bottled.
