My dad is coming down to visit me in adelaide in about 5 months time. He is well into his wines, but I have shown him that beer can give wine a run for its money. He wants to pick up a few cases of beer for a brewery I introduced him to (steam exchange), so I said that I would show him the other breweries in adelaide as well as brew him up a batch of my own stuff.

Now, the only question is, what do I brew him???

Lagers and pseudo lagers are out of the question...as he doesn't like them much.

Porters and stouts would go down a treat, but I fear that he will be buying a case of stout from a brewery here...

I'm not so sure of a hoppy beer...but am up for suggestions. Basically want to brew him a beer, that 1) wouldn't be worth buying (i.e. a beer that would cost $200+ a case to buy from a micro), 2) a beer that isn't readily available and 3) has a good after taste (that's something he looks for, as he is likes his wine after tastes)...

Suggestions?

Maybe a 2IPA or Barley wine...

Cheers
Phil

Maybe go for a dubbel or something along those lines - complexity, richness etc etc.

I think a barley wine might not be ready in time but you could get out a reasonable dubbel and age it a few months. Otherwise a porter.

A barley wine would definitly not be ready in time...but he would take it home to keep for a year or two and only drink a bottle maybe once a month...

A dubbel is doable as well... :)

How do you brew Phillip?

Maybe a maibock?

2c.

Would love to do that as well...just don't have the lager fridge for it, so I am afraid I am limited to ales...I must add that it doesn't have to be ready for him to drink when I give it to him, it can sit under his house for 3 months if need be, not a problem...

Cheers for the responses so far guys!

Brew my Barleywine mate, will be plenty drinkable in 5 months but will only get better with age, and if he like Wine, this would be a treat.... :icon_drool2:

A TTL style ale with a bit more complexity (Add some Munich etc) and fermented with a yeast such as Ringwood at a tad over 20 to push a few esters. ??

I have searched but can't find it - BUT somewhere in the RecipeDB is a MAIBOCK with US-05..... One of the best beers I have ever brewed!! [Partial]

At the time my pallet was young but could still get the complexity.... god, I want one right now!

I will keep searching and repot back if I find it!

Anyway, good luck hope you find the [Your dads] holy grail!!

If he's going to buy a carton of Stout while in town, I would definitely make a good stout for him to drink while with you. Then see what he thinks of the commercial stuff when he gets home hehe.

Being in 5 months time it will be winter and that your dad is a wine drinker so he is used to a higher alcohol %, why not try a RIS (Russian Imperial Stout). Would also try aging it on some oak chips; cause that would help tie the flavours into his wine tastes. If you get brewing it now, should be pretty nice by the time he gets there.

i'm actually liking the idea of the RIS...He can cellar it and drink it every once in a while. /me goes off to read the style of the week for RIS!

Cheers

I'm with Bribie and vote for a bitter. If you're not sure about hoppy beers for him, I doubt he'll like a thwack in the face with C-hops, so make a nice pale ale/amber ale with some Brit hops for the earthy, spicy notes.

if he likes his fortified wines also, then my vote is for a dubbel/triple/quad
failing that a RIS or Scottish or barleywine.

English Barleywine.

After nearly 12 months in the bottle mine is drinking very well. Only wish i had bottled it all into stubbies instead of longnecks!

Hobgoblin? Very nice and warming in winter.

Edit: I can vouch for DrSmurto's version, he passed on a Hobgoblin recipe a while ago and it went down a treat
