I've been hammering the TF Golden Promise, Halcyon and occasional Maris Otter for the last 2 years and just for a change I got in 10k of Bairds Perle to give it a go. I notice that the Poms on Jims etc like the stuff. Any suggestions for a style where it would shine?

Just got in some Wyeast 1968 London ESB liquid yeast and was wondering about something Abbot Ale-ish or Speckled Hen-like?

do you really need addvice on what to do with it? I wouldn't think so, so I gather the purpose of the thread is more general bribie chitter chatter, when I was a little boy in the UK we used to chase the girls and make em cry. ;)

Anyway let us know how it goes.

Bribie,
Old Speckled Hen (adapted from recipe in Clone Brews)
84% Pale Malt(Perle would work nicely)
2.5% Wheat
8% Pale Crysal
5.5% Sugaz

Challenger at 60mins to 25IBU
1/2 gm/l EKG at 15mins
1/2 gm/l Challenger at 15mins
1 gm/l EKG at 1min.

OG 1.050
IBU 37
Mash @ 66 for 90mins

Your 1968 would be good or WLP002, WLP013

Cheers
Nige

I really like this stuff the flavour isn't as thick as maris otter - good for hoppy beers (where Maris otter can blanket out the bitterness).

I just made an ipa recently with half perle half gp and a bit of simpsons aromatic and bairds medium crystal, with stacks of simcoe Amarillo and ahtanum (100 ibu). the malt is that classic bready English flavour, just the way I like it.

Yes I'll whack out an OSH tomorrow as I've got heaps of Challenger and EKG and go hoppy for a change (bring out the Sulphates :p ) Just the job for a nostalgic pom Christmas day.

Keep your posts coming!

I have used the Perle Malt for an India Red Ale (75IBU, Simcoe, Amarilllo, Cascade) and it was fantastic. I agree with Neonmeate as it is a great base for hoppy beers.

Sub it for GP, clean up a LL a bit. Nice 'even' malt IMO, distinct lack of bias in any one flavour compartment without being boring.

I believe last year Ross was going to discontinue Perle due to slow demand, would be a pity and that's another reason I'd like to try it out - sometimes malts (and hops) fall out of fashion for no good reason, and often it's maybe just a fad like the TTL craze of the last year or so, (gotta have GP, gotta have GP) maybe next year we'll be onto something else "must do" like Jennings Sneck Lifter or summat

Yeah Bribie, that's what I thought too, so got mysel accustomed to getting it by the sack, but its still available by the vac pack. I can continue to knock out that Percy Main Pants Dropper for my Geordie neighbour after all- phew! :D

On the subject of O.S.H. I found a thread on this forum from three years ago so I'm all armed up and ready to go first thing in the morning. Apparently Morlands used to use MO, then changed to Pipkin, and who knows what they use since Greed King took them over, so probably Perle is a good middle of the road option. And as Nige posted, the consensus seems to be here and on Uk forum as well

1050, Pale malt, crystal, sugaz, Challenger and Goldings. Jim's beer kit used Wyeast Irish Ale which is interesting. Dunno about the wheat, maybe you are supposed to use that poor terrified wheat, which I don't have any of. I wonder if puffed wheat cereal would work.. off to ALDI again :p

Aldi wheat? I guess puffed, bricks or shredded- just watch that salt addition! Hmm, burghul perhaps? Could be protein- laden, but you wouldn't want much and the leftovers would be fine for tabouleh.

I hope it was a Belgian IPA....
