I see heaps of people on here using these as lauter tuns, party kegs etc.
Are they food grade or doesn't anyone care.
Cheers.

Yes. Plenty of info on it if you search around.

Most stuff is HDPE or PP which is food grade.

I remember from the conversations in the no-chill thread about different plasticisers being used in HDPE depending on the intended use of the plastic. Not all HDPE has "food grade" plasticisers. Not that they would potentially end up in the beer except at high temperature, but it's worth rememberin'.

Not all HDPE is necessarily food-grade. If there's a non-food-grade colourant added, then the HDPE can't be classed as food-grade. And recycled HDPE can't be classed as food-grade.

Anyway, will this be a problem? Dunno. Apparently most of the HDPE that's white or natural is fine, and there are plenty of coloured containers that ARE food grade (water jerry cans are blue).

So many people use esky mash-tuns, I'm sure we would have heard pretty quickly if these things were toxic

on this note aldi has 8 litre sprayers for about $12 at the moment for those wanting a cheap party keg setup this could be the go for a start...

Thanks for the info guys, got a tun made out of a fermenter off my mate, recons it only loses 1deg over 60 mins, and 2deg over 90. If it works ok I'll make my own next weekend.
Cheers.

Or we'll find out in another 20 years or so :D

There is a higher probability that Eskys are more likely to be food grade than Presure Sprayers .

pUMPY :)
