I would like a little advice on making an APA.

i have at hand, 4 kilos traditional ale malt, 1 kilo wheat malt, got some light crystal malt and cararoma, 100g galaxy hops, 15g chinook dry flowers(thanks to gilbrew) and some US-05 yeast.

the plan is to use

4kg trad ale malt
.5kg wheat malt
something for a bit of color???

galaxy ??g 60min
galaxy ??g ??min guessing 20min
chinook 15g 5min

no chill then pitch us-05

any suggestions more than welcome,

all replies appreciated cozmo

I'd add about 200G of light crystal to that grist. As for the hops, IMHO the galaxy will overpower the chinook, for a balance between the two I'd go for 20g galaxy @ 60min or 25g if you like your beers more on the bitter side then 10g galaxy and 15g chinook @ 5 min or 0min. Should give you a bit of balance between the two hop flavours.

cheers

Wot he said but toss in all the wheat.

i am most wanting to use up the chinook flowers, what would be best suited for them. i dont want to over power them, i want to be able to notice them.

so far i have

4kg trad ale malt
1kg wheat malt.......... what will the xtra 500g do
200g light crystal

galaxy 20g 60min
galaxy 10g 5min
chinook 15g 5min

no chill then pitch us-05

not sure on the hops now, should i buy more, maybe some chinook pellets and use flowers for dry hopping? what would be a good bittering hop or stick with galaxy?

For an APA, more hops needed for flavor and aroma. Depending on how bitter you like em I would put the 5 min galaxy to 10 min and add 15g each of chinook at 10min and flame out then dry hop another 15 - 30g at around 4 days. Galaxy is pretty high in the AA so depending on how bitter you like it I would probably drop the 60 min addition back to 15g also and try it as a FWH.

I've never used Galaxy before, but I am a fan of Chinook. It's the feature hop of Pigs Fly Ale.

Recipe looks on the money for me, although I would probably halve the wheat (Just my choice)

An AG brew will have great head retention without the need for huge amounts of wheat.

Cheers,

Fester (About to start drinking my own APA, since I have tomorrow off and thus it is now Friday Night!)

Galaxy Hops. :icon_drool2: Great for bittering due to the high AA, and also good for flavoring. I used it last time in a APA for bittering at 45min and the flavor carried through from there.

Hi there,

I brewed this a few weeks ago.

% Amount Name Origin Potential SRM
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
83.3 5.50 kg. TF Maris Otter Pale Ale Malt UK 1.037 3
7.6 0.50 kg. Weyermann Pale Wheat Germany 1.038 2
1.5 0.10 kg. Weyermann Caramunich I Germany 1.036 51
3.8 0.25 kg. Crystal 55L Great Britian 1.034 55
3.8 0.25 kg. Flaked Corn (Maize) America 1.040 1

Potential represented as SG per pound per gallon.

Hops

Amount Name Form Alpha IBU Boil Time
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
15.00 g. Simcoe Pellet 12.30 23.5 90 min.
10.00 g. Chinook Pellet 13.00 13.5 45 min.
20.00 g. Chinook Pellet 13.00 8.0 15 min.
35.00 g. Amarillo Gold Whole 10.00 6.1 5 min.

Yeast
-----

WYeast 1099 Whitbread Ale

It is probably my best attempt at the style so far. This is the first time I've used high AA hops later in the boil, as flavour and aroma and I think this has made a difference. Also I've used and English ale yeast rather than 1056 or 1332 etc. Previous attempts haven't been "US-hoppy" enough for my palate.

ok, with help from here and elsewhere i will be going with,

4kg trad ale malt
500g wheat malt
200g light crystal

galaxy 15g 60min
galaxy 10g 10min
chinook 15g 10min
chinook 15g 0min

no chill then pitch us-05

dry hop 15g chinook flowers

if at all possible can someone punch the numbers into beersmith for me please, pretty please. my preboil volume will be 31 litres which should give me 23 in the fermenter. the AA of the galaxy is 15%, i dont know about the chinook.

once again thanks to all!

that would be awesome, im not planning on brewing until after lunch Saturday.

cant wait,im rubbing my hands together thinking about it.

good work bconnery, that tells me the numbers im aiming for and im just about right. i just noticed you didnt add the 15g of chinook at flameout, im thinking of ditching galaxy at 10 min but keeping chinook at 10 and 0 minutes (aswell as dry hop 15g of dry chinook fowers) . i want to stay under 40ibu. and i should loose 8 litres through evaporation and trub.

Cosmo, as promised here is the recipe. Pretty much on the money with BConnery. Enjoy Brewing.
