Hi again,

Recently i came across a calculator that calculates the actual alcohol from the gravity readings, i know that a starting gravity of 058 and a finishing gravity of 010 is about 4.8%, but does anyone know where the actual calculator is, please...

Darren, have you been getting unexpectedly drunker than you thought you would on your homebrew??

1.058 down to 1.01 is gonna give you around 6.3% abv !!!

as well as the LC site that mitsa gave you, you could also check out

http://www.beertools.com/

They have lots of tools calculators etc

See ya

Seriously, i thought it was a little strong, pops and i were sitting out last night cooking a couple of mutton birds and the top of the spit roast blew off, we couldn't put the birds out, the couple of over proof stouts we were drinking made it a lot easier to eat the blackened birds......thats why i was after a calculater, jeepers 6.3 hey!

I have always used the following
(start gravity - finish gravity) divide result by 7.36
= Av %
That gets you close

I have always taken SG (for example 1.040) to equal 4% alcohol. I know it is not accurate and does err on the high side but saves me from doing any maths.

It's rare for my beers to finish below 1.010

cheers

Darren

I was always under theimpression that you multiply the difference from OG to FG by 0.132. Hence, 58-10 = 48 * 0.132 = 6.336 or 6.3%. Think I read it somewheer in BYO or Zymurgy, IIRC.
All the best

add about an extra 0.5% alc if you bottle for priming sugar.

The Seibel Institute in the US make a great little slide-rule brew computer gizmo that relates original extract, apparent extract, real extract and alcohol as well as conversion of temperature, pressure and SG/plato and a handy disolved CO2 temp/pressure calculator. Good little tool for $15.

I'll second that. Randall put me onto it, and it is gold. Combined with the Dr Bob "Hop Bitterness Estimator" and "Wheel of Beer Wort Gravity Calculator" (Randy Mosher), that's all I've ever used.

Don't have a piece of brew software... yet...

1 ∕ 7.36 = 0.136 which is close to the figure you use. I guess if we want to get a little more inebriated, we use my figure.
