... and countless others mourned the loss of more than 1 million litres of beer.

The London Beer Flood happened when a 600000L vat burst, and caused others to fail as well. 1.4 million litres of beer flooded through the tenements surrounding the Meux brewery, knocking down buildings and causing loss of life and a huge amount of damage.

A local tavern makes a batch of porter each year to mark the occasion.

I find it fascinating that 200 years ago they already had a vat that could hold 610000L of beer. That's amazing.

Used to live not far from there, but never knew back then.

That and there's a brewery big enough to hold 2 million pints of beer in tanks (with probably many more in casks in pubs being served) yet hasn't really made any mark on any beer history I've heard, except in disastery way.
