    First Cider Brew

Beware of the cider flavouring in the sachet. The one which comes with the MJ Apple cider is mostly artificial sweetener. Shoppe

Fill A Bottle From A Fire Extinguisher

On a similar topic, does anyone know how I can refill my cigarette lighter from my 9kg LPG barbecue gas bottle? Shoppe.

    Yeast Nutrient

If you have Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) you can add it to the boil if you are doing one. There would be no need to boil anything when making cider, I would think, anyway. If you are using Bintani yeast nutrient or Fermaid K, I wouldn't add it to the boil because boiling would probably destroy the...

    Hbs In Canberra

Late hopping? The adage "Better late than never" would apply here, methinks. If you can organize your meetings for the first Thursday of the month, I can drag you along to the CBC meetings. Regards, Shoppe

    Hbs In Canberra

It was great to meet you, Tonof. Thanks for dropping by. Sorry, I forgot to give you an ice brick for your hops. Canberra folks (as well as AHB folks) are renowned for their friendliness and willingness to help. Shoppe.

    Hbs In Canberra

I bought the paper thanks, Dicko (no, not the entire output. Just one copy). Tom's a good man and puts out some tremendous beers. The website will be up as soon as I can work out how to connect it with MYOB. I'm hiring Chubby to do it. Regards, Shoppe

A 22mm or a 7/8" AF ring spanner will fit. A cheapie would be OK considering the small amount of work it will be required to do. Shoppe

    Leaking Beer Tap,

It's a cheap Indian copy of the Brumby tap, Q. I fixed one today where the seal in the back at the end of the central shaft had unscrewed itself. Just unscrew the back and thread the little dome shaped doovey back on with a screwdriver. You should have received a spare rubber seal with the font...

    Hbs In Canberra

When are you coming down, Tuno? I'll put the kettle on, or whack a couple of glasses in the freezer, whichever you prefer. Don't come on Saturday as I will be at Bungendore, judging the HB comp at the local show. One of the more pleasant perks of the job. Regards, Shoppe.

    Nervous New Brewer Question

"No dry hopping, boiled and added to the kit before being added to the fermentor. The taste was a bit sour and it smells like a fruity cider at this point in time." Monkey, the sour taste is a bit of a worry. If you want to bring a sample in to me (BYOAH at Kambah Village), I can check it for...

    Fresh Wort Kits In Canberra?

Thanks, Dr K, Troughy, Ross and Steve for the kind comments and recommendations. FWKs do indeed make better beer than most kits. After all, they are all grain. The freight component is ridiculously high, but, then, what is one to do? I can also highly recommend membership of the Canberra Brewers...

Danny Boy, I don't think I've seen these photos, even though I have seen the Ram and Shackle Inn in the flesh, so to speak. After I get back from the cricket, I'm going to build me bar to rival the R & S Inn. Happy Xmas, my boy and have a safe one. Shoppe.

    Chilli! All Things Chillies.

I can vouch for the quality of Steve's Habanero sauce. It's better than ANY commercially produced chilli sauce that I have ever purchased. Great hint of coconut, just the right amount of heat and a lovely fruity character. Thanks Steve. I've had to buy chilli plants this year (oh! the shame of...

    Recommendations For Pubs In Europe

Here's a good link... In Amsterdam de Bieaard is worth a visit. See the above link for details... Brouwerij 'T ij is also a must I think. It is a little out of the main tourist strip but very cool, and good beer. Apart from that I'd recommend visiting Beer Advocate, a US site, which will have...

    Visiting Belgium - Which Breweries

I've been a couple of times and am returning in April next year. I can recommend Tim Webb's Good Beer Guide to Belgium and Holland. Try and get to Cafe Bottelje in Ostend, which had 13 beers on tap (the usual culprits such as Stella, Guinness, Tennants and Fosters(!) but they had 312 different...
