    Dry Or Liquid Malt

Is there any difference in fermentability between dry or liquid malts?

    Hop Extract

I have noticed that some kits simply list hops in their ingredients whilst others list hops and hop extract or hop extract only. Does this mean that the kits that dont list hop extract actually boil hops in their wort to get the required bitterness or can they use hop extracts and simply call...

    Racking Question

I racked my beer into a 20L jerry can this morning. Since It was only about 17L it did not fill all the way. I squeezed out as much as possible (which wasn't a lot) and tightened the lid. The jerry can does not seem to be returning to its original shape. I was expecting that there would still be...

    Malt Extract Help

I agree with deebee I think that under attenuated extract is the cause of many of the problems Ive had using extract. I have found it is essential to make certain that the beer is fully fermented. I brew a mixture of fresh wort kits and extract brews. I use the same yeast US 56 and brew at...

    Bottles - Glass Vs Pet

I usually bottle about 1/3 in PET and drink these first. I have noticed that beer does oxidise quicker in the PET bottles. For paler beers I try and drink them in the first 5 or 6 months. Ive stored darker beers longer without problem. :)

    Coopers Ale Yeast

Plan B Buy a 100can cooler from K-Mart ($20). I recently got one and easily kept my last brew at 18C (even when the weather was >35C) by simply using bottles of frozen salty water. I only needed to use one 2L bottle at a time, which lasted 8 -12 hours. I do however keep the brew in the laundry...

    High Sg

How big was the can of light malt you added (1 or 1.5kg)? What was the volume of you brew? If it was 1.5kg you added a total of 3.2kg of liquid malt, 500g dry malt and 300g dextrose, which in a 23L brew would give a SG of around 1057 or a bit lower. 1052 seems fine to me. Bruce

    Extract Attenuation

In most cases I do use a small amount of dextrose. If I am brewing stouts I've done all malt, and occasionally done all malt with highly bittered kits. The attenuation variations I mentioned ignore the dextrose, which I've assumed is 100% fermentable. I have had all malt brews of OG 1.040...

    Extract Attenuation

I've only beer brewing for a year, but have found one of the most frustrating things is the variation in fermentability of malt extract. I like to adjust the OG (by varying volume or amount of malt) in an attempt to get an ABV and FG appropriate to the style. However, I've had attenuations...

    Extra Yeast

    Extra Yeast

I will be brewing a stout next week. Ive currently got a Safale 56 and Muntons premium gold in the fridge. I was planning to use the Safale, but am wondering if pitching both (a total of 17.5g of yeast) would have a positive or negative effect. Is 17.5 grams to much yeast for an ale? Would...

    Safale 56

Thanks for all the advice? I was a bit concerned as the bloke at the HMS told me the yeast would not ferment properly below 20C. But it sounds like I shouldnt have any problems. Has anyone found that a fast fermetation at a yeasts upper temp range produces a beer of lower FG, than a slower...
