I tried making a PA with cluster to see if it came out tasting anything like the distinct XXXX hop flavour, but it was not comparable, I have heard somewhere they use essence.

just went on the xxxx ale house tour last week. They use Joe white as their malt and Cluster pellets for their hop additions. According to the tour that is.

Yes and how rank did the cheesy old hops smell!!
They also said on the tour that there are 4 ingredients in beer. Malt, Hops, water and sugar......
