I've got a hot water system that sits in a cupboard in the laundry. At this time of year the laundry (which is attached to the garage) is basically outside temp, which gets down to zero at night and is rarely ever more than 9 degrees.

The cupboard keeps a good ale temp in winter - 15-20 degrees for most of winter. It isn't ideal in terms of temp control, but in the sense that I brew beers that can cope with this, it's a good solution. It also doubles as a conditioning cupboard.

The upside is, leaving the fermenter on the laundry sink is pretty much a CC at the moment.

cheap hair dryer connected to an STC1000, job done!

ED: in a ferment fridge that is :p

LOL now that I don't need to get up to see to the kids in the night I am not starting down that track with my beer :)

I have a fridge for cooling, and an old kitchen cupboard with a fan heater and a temp controller with a blanket that does a pretty good job.

Move north... my fermenting fridge is still holding 18c without any heating. :D

But my other fermenting fridge that needs 26c I'm using one of these hooked up to the stc. 7m of cord allows an excellent distribution of heat.

Brew a lager
Hug your fermenter
Buy a heater belt

(thats what I did - in order)

I use a 75W lamp in a baynet holder attached to a block of wood sitting on the fridge floor.

Cover with empty dog food tin with a small hole punched in the top to let the hot air out and keep most of the light in.

Set Fridgemate to heat mode.

If temps rise too much due to fermentation or shed temp , I just plug the fridge in for a couple of hours to drop it down again.
