Hi guys,

I'll be in Melb over Easter and wondered where would be a good place to go for a beer? If Mountain Goat is open I'll drop in, I'm staying near there. I will also go to the James Squires Brew House, and possibly Transport.

Any other places worth checking out?

The Gem in Wellington Street Collingwood is my local. Good, basic, down to earth place with live music most nights and real beer on tap.

Bell's in South Melbourne supports craft brewers and have their own beer. If you're drinking at Transport, eat at Chocolate Buddha @ Fed Square.

Spills,

The Gem is a great pub, but I still think of it as Amys or maybe the Curry Family Hotel. Had plenty of great feeds in there, aimiable local crowd and good beers to be drunk. Always good music.

Mate, you are around the corner from me (East Melbourne) we'll have to get together for a beer one of these days.

Rudy,

as well as the Gem and the pplaces you mentioned, try Cookie in Swanston st and check this thread

Great Spanish Food at Movida and some unusual looking Spanish Beer served there also

I never set foot in the place until the most recent publican came along - but have lived next door for 7 years or so...

Always happy to drink beer - as well as it is good beer! :D

Cookie is not a bad place at all. It was a bit busy and trendy for me, but I'm told that's what the young people like these days... :p

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, I'll try to see as much as I can in 2.5 days!

Is it worth going to the James Squires in the Docklands, or is it about the same as the Portland hotel? If it is, it it hard to find? I haven't been to the Docklands before.

Easy to find. Its right up the end.

Although the Terminal (bottom of Federation square) is not really my choice of pubs as far as atmosphere, they have about 100 beers available over the bar of which they claim only one or two are out of stock.

Also this link shows Melbourne Microbreweries

ATOMT

If you're in Richmond/East Melbourne, then be very very sure to go to the Lambs go bar (Fitzroy)

http://www.lambsgobar.com.au/

100 beers and you can investigate the fridge on the web site. The Smith St side Fitzroy/Collingwood is also best the place in town. Get into the Rose, Union, Rainbow or Napier for a REAL Melbourne pub experience

And, Jesus Christ man... dont go to Transport

Cheers

If you can arrange transport to Woodend Keatings hotel is a gem. Handpumped Holgate is to die for. Top food and atmosphere also. :beerbang:

Warren -

The Lambsgo is a great place. Jump on a #86 tram from Bourke St and get off at the Safeway. Dunno if they still do the Wheel of Beer.

Remember that Transport is very supportive of craft brewing and so should in turn be supported by craft and home brewers. They're also well placed to get home again...

Thanks again for the suggestions guys.

Having only 2.5 days and no wheels I didn't get much opportunity to see new places but still managed to get to Mountain Goat on Friday night for a few pints of double hop IPA, tasted a bit different to what I remember from the Weatie on Wednesday night (Adelaide). Perhaps fresher.

Cookie was great! Could have spent longer there, heaps of nice beers and a lot of micro's I'd never heard of. Had a few pints at Squires (Russell one) and a few big bottles of LCPA at Section 8, a car park with a bar in a shipping container! Classy :) And a Chimay on tap at Transport, just for the novelty and because my tram from East Melb went past.

Tried to go to 3 degrees, but it was closed??? Next time I'll make sure I see Bell's and Lambsgo.... Maybe the new tower on Southbank will be open then too.
