Admittedly I rarely buy my Home Brew supplies at supermarkets; I think we should all support our LHBS.
However about a third of the items you bought did have a GST component.
If your supermarket isnt charging GST then they will be facing a very hefty bill.

As to GST having no effect on a business, if you are not just trying to stir the pot, I hope you have a really, really good accountant.

Mark,

Did you actually read my post?

1. I simply replied to your post where you inferred that Wollies etc charged GST on items like sugar - Incorrect, they don't. This is the law & they will not be facing a very hefty bill. The GST was charged on items that wern't food items as per Philmacs post.

2. I never said GST doesn't affect a business - Of course it does, certainly affects mine. What I said was that GST you pay on the products you sell is claimable & GST you recieve is payable - It is the customer who ends up paying GST.

3. Not stirring at all, as I said, I wasn't arguing on the legality's of a HBS charging GST (as i don't know the answer) on sugar, just pointing out that supermarkets don't.

Cheers Ross

Well, it's easy to see what has GST on a docket- it's what has an asterisk on it.

I think the point that's being made is that while sugar sold in the sugar section does not attract GST, for some reason brewers sugar, sold in the brewing section, does.... I think. I don't know, I don't buy brewer's sugar and I don't buy from supermarkets.

I have a cunning plan..... I will dig up my back lawn and plant hops and barley (and maybe some wheat). That way I won't have to pay GST. I might have to quit my day job so I can tend the crops. Mmmmmm! Maybe I'll just buy the stuff after all, and pay the damn tax!

A kilo of table sugar from the table sugar section would not. Yes it is arbitrary, but such is the system... I think

Shawn.

Aha! Perfect solution... substiute your kilo of dex for a kilo of table sugar. Yummy! Cheaper to boot.

The answer's been before my eyes all these years and I've failed to see it.
