brew it and find out for yourself...you can always dry hop it if it isn't enough aroma.

To be honest, that is just a little under done for my taste. I don't know how much you like galaxy or how much you like hops. I would keep the hops the same at the moment (for your first time round), however, I would increase the 60 min addition a tad to bring it to at least 45 IBU.

I do like a hoppy beer and even a strong passion fruit flavour, when i was punching in the numbers i was thinking that i was a bit light on but was being a bit cautious, I'll pump up the IBU's and stop sitting on the fence!!

Have you had Stone + Wood Draught ale? Heres a close recipe by haysie (i think) that i brewed up recently.
The galexy was amazingly fruity and smells great. No problems at all.

I know your malt is different, but even with the 15g @ 15, and 20g @ 5 and 0 this was damn good!

2.78 kg Pilsner, Malt Craft Export (Joe White) (3Grain 57.1 %
1.86 kg Wheat Malt, Malt Craft (Joe White) (3.5 EGrain 38.1 %
10.00 gm Galaxy [14.00%] (30 min) Hops 11.6 IBU
15.00 gm Galaxy [14.00%] (15 min) Hops 11.3 IBU
20.00 gm Galaxy [14.00%] (5 min) Hops 6.0 IBU
20.00 gm Galaxy [14.00%] (0 min) Hops -
20.00 gm Galaxy [14.00%] (Dry Hop 5 days) Hops -
0.23 kg Corn Sugar (Dextrose) (0.0 EBC) Sugar 4.8 %

Haven't tried that one but had the pacific ale the other night, it was a taste galaxy brew, although I personally would have like more flavour and aroma, that said it could have been an old bottle.

How similar are the too?

Its the same thing :icon_cheers:

there's no such thing as too much galaxy :) If it was me i'd be reducing the 60min addition and pumping up the later additions (if you want to keep it at the same ibus)

As Winkle mentioned above, its the same thing. They recently changed the name from draught ale and called it pacific ale. Great example of the correct use of galaxy hops.

Cheers

I dry hop 75g for a 20lt batch! Now your talking passion fruit!

This is closer to the S&W Pacific, so I'm told - and it's lovely!

I bitter with 15gm for 60 min and find this is more than enough for my tastes. (plus 20 @ 20).

I also agree with above comments about tiral and error - it really is a unique hop with an acquired taste.

Yeah sorry bob, they are the same, im used to the old name.

But yeah i recon just galexy this shit out it late and enjoy. The 25g @ 10 and 0 you suggested should go down fine in a maltier beer.
If it comes out too hopy you can always let it settle down before you drink it and be wary for next time.

thanks for your feedback guys, I'm going to Thelma and Louise this one and go with 25 gram additions, I love to hoppy far more than under hopped so looks like the best approach. We have a meeting this Sunday too @WGB and one of the blokes there made an amazing Galaxy beer, I will pick his brains about his recipe...

I have made this a few times, and this is what works on my system. Had a party last weekend, went through 70L beer, this was the most popular drop.

Hopping shedule:
100.00 gm Galaxy [13.40 %] (Dry Hop 3 days) Hops -
5.00 gm Galaxy [13.40 %] (20 min) Hops 4.4 IBU
12.00 gm Galaxy [13.40 %] (8 min) Hops 5.3 IBU
30.00 gm Galaxy [13.40 %] (0 min) Hops
I use a Jamiel chiller so flameout to 70degrees in about 3 minutes (no added bitterness after that). Even still, bitterness is (perceived) at about 28 IBU I reckon

The recipe before this had this schedule and was too bitter:
100.00 gm Galaxy [13.40 %] (Dry Hop 3 days) Hops -
10.00 gm Galaxy [13.40 %] (20 min) Hops 9.0 IBU
16.00 gm Galaxy [13.40 %] (8 min) Hops 7.1 IBU
30.00 gm Galaxy [13.40 %] (0 min) Hops -

Don't get me wrong, I am normally a black beer drinker. My house beer is a 50 IBU 7% F.E.S so bitterness is my best friend.

The figures seem wrong, but I have been a brewer and judge long enough to know that taste is the most important factor.

Glad you gave it a go mate. What yeast did you use? I mainly have used 1272 for the above recipe only cause I had heaps of it but just bought in a pack of 1056 which I am going to use for the xmas case swap beer. My biased opinion is great beer, love it although I do get some tartness above the galaxy, which maybe the 1272 hence the 1056 try.

My personal thing about Galaxy for bittering is NONE @60, never made a good beer using it this way....harsh.

fairly certain I know what you mean, just tasted the fermenter sample and wow that bittering was in you face harsh... It will be interesting to see if it settles in a month or so.

4.90 kg Pale Malt, Traditional Ale (Joe White) (3.Grain 85.96 %
0.40 kg Caramalt (Joe White) (25.0 SRM) Grain 7.02 %

there's no such thing as too much galaxy :) If it was me i'd be reducing the 60min addition and pumping up the later additions (if you want to keep it at the same ibus)

This all the way. I'm brewing more and more with fewer 60min additions (and smaller additions) and boosting my 10, 5 and 0 minute additions and it's improving what comes out at the end.

Farkinell...I've tweaked my house APA to be 15 grams of Galaxy (~14%) at 90 mins with a burst of 28 grams at 0.
I usually have to let it sit for a couple of weeks to settle before I'm happy.
I find the Galaxy to be aggressive as hell but rewarding when balanced and late. Love that fruit salad.

I've only done 1 beer with galaxy and found it very harsh and resiny (for a few months at at least). I used a generic 60min bittering hop and did galaxy 10@20, 20@5 and 20 dry hopped. This was no chill, with no adjustment re hot wort in cube... might be the reason.

I've read of heaps of people being happy with galaxy so I am having a crack at an APA shortly and plan to use 25@60, 15@10 and 15 dry hop, because I am no chill I will drop the hops in the cube.

Probably not much help, meh :)

I don't know what people are doing wrong but I have come across a few threads with people addvising to go easy with galaxy, I don't see why you would unless you want to make a step up APA half a beer.

I would be using something else for bittering though if your going for a high IBU but I see no reason why you have to go easy on finishing hops. At least a gram per litre at 20mins and twice that at the end.

Ive done a beer with plenty of Galaxy. It taught me the definition of a harsh bitterness! I'll only use bigger additions now at 20mins.
