I've just been offered and accepted a new job in Sydney which I'm going to be starting next month. I've got stuff to move from here in Darwin. Wondered if anyone has any advice or recommendations for moving? I don't have furniture to move, just about 6 packing cases plus a computer and a banjo. Although now I've got all this kegging gear, it might be an additional couple of boxes.

Any help would be much appreciated! And see you in Sydney in a month :)

First and final tip: leave the banjo!

Not a chance! I plan to sit around Martin Place plucking away.

All that recent hassle with a keg and now you decide to move. ;).
At least you'll be able to source gear etc more easily.

Save more money than you think you need.
Take less stuff than you think you need.
Roll with the punches.
Expect some 'what the **** have I done?' moments.
Make the best of everything as soon as you can, realise nothing is perfect or permanent and embrace your new life.
Also get and question as many moving quotes as you can. There is massive disparity, no regulation.
And work out whether the new pubs do schooners or pints.

Awesome, thanks all. Will look up backloading!

Yeah, will be nice to not pay silly money for grain and postage. Can't wait!

In Australia lots more goods get trucked north to Darwin and west Perth than vise versa, so truckies try to find as much freight as they can for their return trip by backloading rather than getting nothing at all. It benefits them and you, they at least get something towards their fuel bill, and you get good value for money for shipping costs. Same goes for shipping containers by rail, it costs about half the price to move from Perth to Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne than east to west.

If you havnt used or seen it in 6 months....ditch it

Moving is the perfect opportunity to get rid of ****. Its amazing how much crap you accumulate and never use

Dont move bulky stuff like fridges and washing machines. You can buy 2nd hand stuff when you get there that will be just as good if not better than what you had. Check out facebook local buy/swap sell pages....

Most people keep crap/stuff/**** for no other reason than there is no other reason

and lastly....... get a place near a decent watering hole.....

Definitely chuck it on a pallet. Drop by a warehouse and grab the tail end of a roll of pallet wrap. Find out how to wrap a pallet (two hints: tight, 3-4 layers) and wrap it. Backload.

Did a search on gumtree for backloading, found a guy heading back from Darwin to NSW the same week I'm finishing up here. He's going to take my stuff for $400. Couldn't be a better result! You've saved me over $500 on using a removals company!

Cheers!

I your transport guy falls through, we've used this mob a few times - basically an interstate transport hub.

Coming from Darwin you'll need warm clothing also. Its a bone chilling 33 deg and a desert like 55% humidity here.
