I have done some research on this one and it seems some people are against the thermo on a brew pot and some wouldn't go without.

Just want some opinions on this. I'm getting a 72l pot with a spigot next week. I'm planning on doing biab first and maybe using it as an independent kettle later.

If money isn't an issue would you get a thermometer put in?

Cheers

Main reason for a thermo on a BK would be if you using a chiller and you can monitor the wort temp.... other wise it is really just for an interested brewer.

In BIAB, I would say the probe could cause an issue and really you want to be taking temp readings 'in' the mash, preferably a few different points to confirm actual temp.

Your decision but just a couple of things to keep in mind.

Cheers

I BIAB and just use a hand held electric thermo and measure at a couple of points in the mash
It's also guaranteed not to get snagged on the bag ;)
I'm also currently building up my 3V rig and won't be adding a thermo to the kettle, I can't see the need in my circumstances

I have an RTD probe through the side of my kettle that I connect to my PID controller. I control one of my kettle elements with the PID, set it to about 98°C, and leave the lid on the kettle while I get on with something else without worrying about a boil-over and having to watch the kettle like a hawk.

I chill in the kettle so later on the PID just becomes a thermometer to tell me when to stop chilling.

Yeah, I have an electric fired keggle as well that I'm in the process of putting a thermowell to that for temp control. Was thinking I can use that as my hlt and my 72L pot (gas fired 3 ring) as mash tun/ kettle. I think ill leave it for now and put a thermo in later if I think it'll help. Last thing I want is holes in my new pot for no reason.
