have just started brewing(done 1/2 dozen brews) and have noticed that my temp using a burker immersion heater is quite different to the temp reading on the stick on thermometer on the outside of the brew barrel that was supplied by about 8-9 degrees even with the fermenator wrapped with a towel, which one is right and is this common and will it affect my brewing???

Yes, your temp being out by almost 10 degrees will effect your beer. However I'm not so sure I'd be ready to assume the sticker was out by that much. Sure, they aren't accurate but I'd think it was something more like a 2 degree or so deviation. Perhaps both are out a bit. Regardless, I'd be more inclined to follow the sticker temp as a guide than the dial on the thermostat for the heater (as I understand it those heaters don't have a probe?).

[EDIT: parenthesis]

Urn thermostat is more likely to be the one that is out of whack.

Can you source a glass thermometer or similar? It will come in handy in the brewery.

Welcome to the Forums also!

Please Dont!

If you start fiddling with the thermostat settings it will take ages to get the
temp right.

I have used one of those Burker brew heaters for years and years. Leave on the factory setting and you'll be sweet. Those stick on thermometers are unreliable. No need to wrap the fermenter up either.

cheers
