howdy y'all, im looking to go into all grain brewing, ive constructed my mashtun and have everything i need

BUT, my stockpot is completely inadequate, i figure i need at least a 20L one maybe more, anyone know where i can grab one that isnt ridiculously expansive?

Welcome to the Forum Mixmasterfestis,
If you go to your controls you can edit your location settings. Once we know where you live roughly we would be happy to help (it's best to avoid paying freight on these sort of things). The search facility on this site can sometimes be a little unhelpful so I tend to use google and enter someting along these lines:- kettle :aussiehomebrewer.com
Happy searching and good luck !
Cheers
Doug

Don't know where you are, but when I lived in Hobart, I found a catering supply place. They quoted me $90 + GST for a 50L Aluminium Stock Pot (ie $99), but had none in stock, so got the 60L for the same price!

My advice is find a catering supply place, and negotiate your arse off on price. You'll still pay tax on it all, but you should get a good deal! (ie under $100 Schmakeroos!)

My 2c worth anyway!

Cheers

Nick

PS: All depends on how serious with the whole brewing thing you are. I was a shiteload more serious than I'd imagined, so went for the biggest and best I could afford!!!! might be good advice, might be blowing smoke...only you know mate!

Catering suppliers are the way to go. They'll supply pots so big you could take a bath in 'em.

My tip is think of the biggest size you'd need, and add 10L to it. I bought a 50L (~$80), and now I regularly boil 40L or more and wish it was 60L. A big pot also makes a great storage unit for the bits and pieces you use on brewday anyway.

You can get away with 40L but 50 is ideal for a normal batch.

I use 40 but I am regularly quite near the top which makes for interesting times come the hop additions...

I have a 75litre aluminium and have just set up a 19litre stainless for half-sized batches. I bought the 75 from a second-hand shop and had to do some 'work' on it and the 19litre cost me $20 at a cheapie shop.

It depends on what you want to do and how you do things. I can't do half-sized batches in my big kit because there isn't enough depth for my electric immersion heaters. I want to do half-sized batches so I can brew *more* often. Some people don't have the luxury of as much spare time (and no kids) as I do, so double batches are the go so they can brew *less* often.

It could be that my stainless pot is a tad easier to clean than the aluminium (ignoring size), but it's too early to say for sure.

I recommend aluminium. It is cheaper, lighter, conducts heat better, and it is easy to clean. Just don't expect it to 'shine' like SS. In fact don't use any harsh scrubbers (coming, dear) or solvents on it. The patina that develops is a good thing and you want to keep it. A mild detergent and a cloth are the go.

Agreeed that catering places are good.

In Melbourne - Hotel Agencies - www.hotelagencies.com.au/home. I can see massive pots on their website but they do have them.

otherwise try and pick up a CUB keg, cut the top out and you have a huge pot (100L?). If I had of been homebrewing at the the time I got 4 CUB Kegs, I wouldnt have turned them into kickarse firebins :(

check out the trading post and ebay. there seems to be plenty of people selling big pots. just look for a bargin

CUB kegs are only 50 litres as are the tooheys/lion nathan variety...

If you want a cheap pot or the budget is tight, large aluminim pots can be found in most asian varity stores.

I'm in Melbourne & found my stainless steel pot in Footscray, but have also seen examples in Brunswick & Richmond. No doubt Springvale would be a good hunting ground too.

... and you can actually buy them legally, which I consider a bonus over the keg solution.

I'm too lazy to find the discussion thread, but a while ago we went around the issue of keg acquisition and it would appear that there is no legal way of acquiring kegs from the large Australian breweries for reuse of any kind.

As Spills has said, one of the advantages of the stockpots is that they are actually legal. Please, if you have a penchant for confiscating the property of Foster/lion nathan/coopers and cutting it into bits.... at least refrain from just nakedly saying so. People who work for them might  actually frequent this forum, and it would be pleasant if their face weren't rubbed in the fact that people are stealing their companies' infrastructure.

Perhaps just "keg" would do rather than CUB keg.... please

For those in Sydney, McCarthys Catering Supplies have several 70-80l? / 45cm dia Alu stockpots on sale for $103. This is quite thick Piazza Italy brand. no affiliations, just bought some beer glasses there thurs :)

I hear that MHB has been working on some dome-bottom kettles of various sizes, with legs

Haven't heard much about them for a while, but I know he was keen to produce these as part of a buildable set of mash tun, kettle and HLT, modular-thingy.

Give him a yell and you might do well.

Sorry MHB, if this is pre-emptive.

No affiliation, although maybe I should ask...

As noted by Redbeard, McCarthy's have three 45cm stockpots (71.5l) aluminium stock pots for just over $100. Apparently they are on special because they don't have matching lids.

I just bought an 80 litre aluminium stock pot + lid from there for just over $140, after the trade discount of course. ;-)

I know that the pot is going to be hard to hide at home, but "shhh" don't tell my wife.
