Cheers

"The weather boosted visitor numbers over the first weekend to 1 million, up 100,000 from last year. The festival was so packed that most of the 14 giant tents were closed to newcomers shortly after midday, when Munich mayor Christian Ude started the beer flowing by ceremonially tapping the first keg."

That's a long way to travel not to get a beer if you are a newcomer...

Oh my giddy Aunt!

Hmmm. But I haven't seen girls like that here.

Although i did see a bevy of beautiful maidens who came close getting money from an ATM.

Well I take your point Zwickel about the "way is the goal" but I imagine home brewing is pretty uncommon here??
But beer isn't only cheap here, the mega swill is much better than the mega swill back home and has prettier labels. :)

Are there HB shops in Hamburg?

As for lifestyle ... well its very pleasant here. We are staying in one of the trendiest bits of town. Not sure how the cost of rent etc. compare. Ours might be subsidised. The city is so pretty and quiet and clean. There are almost no cars on the street and as a result people are quiet and so are their mobiles. Some food is cheaper and some is more expensive than home.

And if you miss the beach you can always surf in the EisBach, a man made stream with one wave in it.

Might be nice to have a home here for the australian winter. :)

good morning braufrau,

first let me say, Im not a Hamburger, Im a Homburger :)
Homburg lies about 180km west of Frankfurt, close to the French boarder.

We have also a large homebrewing community here, Id say at least as many homebrewers as Australia have, but the population here is 4 times more than in Aus.

We also have HB shops, not as many as Australia has, but we have some, mostly operating via internet.

just as an example: www.braupartner.de

Thats nice to hear, so you are on the lucky side,

enjoy your trip, the german food and the bavarian beer diversity

Cheers :)

Boozy, if I have a look at the pics in your footy, I would say you better match to the carnival, anyway youd have no other choice, the oktober fest will be over soon. If your appearance would be like that, youd win a price at least

Dont forget, even if its deep wintertime, drinkers sun is shining in every beer hall and pub.

No, seriously, carnival is a great event in Germany. People turn crazy because after a long, cold and boring period of winter, they are seeking something exciting and because its still very cold outside, they have to celebrate inside.

So there are huge dancing halls and almost every pub celebrates its "Hausball".
Over the days of carnival almost each pub will be crowded by beerdrinkers.

At "fat thursday" or also called "old wifes fastnacht" all the women are going out separated from men, they take over to reign, so thats the start of the core time of carnival.

some words of comfort to you: it might be the same people celebrating the carnival as you can see at Oktoberfest, they are not vanished ;)

Cheers mate :icon_cheers:

Oh! And hence, on fat tuesday, all the gay guys in sydney dance through the streets with not much on.
Now I understand its origins! :)

Cheers!
