there doesn't seem to be any referance to bitterness on the site, tho the anticipated ibu's i got from promash do seem a tad high for an ipa.

has anyone mashed this with good results?

the last ipa i brewed was Denny Conn's Rye IPA and absolutely loved it so was thinking of giving this a go but last time i used chinhook as a bittering hop and tried
it i shat my pants it was very harsh.

Brewed this beer on quite a few occasions and once being with jayse in Adelaide on one of my visits.Beersmith gives the IBU rating at 120.3
It is a relatively big beer Randyrob but im sure you will enjoy it as i did.Must brew this again some time soon.

Cheers

I have brewed this a couple times and BigD I think brews it often.

Personally I didn't think it was all that as its written there way too bitter and borderline undrinkable. At 1.065 really half that bitterness or less than that there would be/is more than ample.

What was your bitterness ratio for the DC rye IPA? I'd stick to that. My the rye IPA was pretty much 1.065 and 60 IBU which I think is much better for this type of beer.

This recipe does seem to get some ravings in some circles but personally that IBU is just stupid for this beer and with chinnook for 60mins for the most part it borders on only barely drinkable. Cut the IBU and massive chinnook at the start down considerably and its good.

Cheers mate just what i wanted to hear, i adjusted my bittering calcs to tinseeth and it came out around 140ibu which is prolly what the author used.

i originally set the hops to pellets and the ibu's were close to 200, then noticed it called for whole flowers.

i'll still use pellets and adjust my recipe accorrdingly.

now my next question to myself should i brew 20 or 40 litres... mwah ha hahaha

Hey Jayse.

my DC Rye IPA was 1070 and 70 ibu's and i was very happy with that so i'll take your advice onboard and drop the chinhook at least by half.

Thanks! Rob.

Interesting comments Jayse but maybe my tastes are a bit weird as although bitter i did find the sharpness subsides with age and it still is a beer i enjoy.
Not every ones fave but if you dont try at least one high ibu beer in your time then you may not realise all is not so bad in the high ibu scale.Go for your life Randyrob and if you dont like it well you can always chuck it my way ;)

Cheers

Hey guys,
I really wonder if theres any difference between say 60 and 120 IBU sometimes. So in the bitterness level maybe its OK just my first one to the recipe (which I brewed with a yard full of drunken brewers including Bigd) was a bit harsh, which you may well beable to just put down to the actuall amount of chinnook in the boil for so long rather than the actuall number of IBU's.
Still I maintain 60-70 IBU is plenty, if you think about it a pale ale at 1.065 is only 1.010 more than a standard pale ale, the grist is the same nothing more complex or anything just 1.010 bigger and it hardly calls for a extra 100 IBU than a standard pale ale in my mind.

I don't for a second doubt the ones you have made have been great Bigd, just for me I'am not too much of a fan of a wheelbarrow of chinnook thrown it at the very start.
For me around 30IBU of simcoe at the start and again at 30mins then followed by the finishing hops is better.

With the finishing hops too I think spreading them out evenly along the 15mins to 0mins works well rather than just a big hit at 15mins, like 15, 10, 5 & 0.

In saying all that there may have been some over hopping of mine as I didn't keep a eye on the kettle when you drunk bastards were here so I don't know what extra hops went in while I was not looking. But I do remember hiding the hops thinking such a thing might happen   Well I know that didn't happen because you were all too busy drinking beer but it sounds funny.

It was a long time ago now but the stick to your ribs harsh bitterness of that beer will live with me forever and the keg lasted longer than any beer I have brewed because of it.

I'am raving and ranting/dribbling now.
Cheers
Jayse

Jayse, Big D,

Was that the day of the "Big Spiced Lager"?

That is the worst beer I have ever had. No actually Vegemite or peanut paste beer were on Par
