When I first started grad school, the technician in charge of the area where I worked told me a story. A policeman in his hometown had done something rotten to his friend when his friend got married, so of course the poor guy reciprocated when the policeman was married. He rigged up a light on top of his roof to a pressure switch on his bed. And he didn't tell him of the light. Several months later the police officer was on his way to work in the wee hours of the morning and he just happened to see the light flash as his wife was returning to bed after seeing him off. Turns out the entire neighbourhood knew of the light and what its flashing meant. As the story goes, they moved immediately after.
Flash forward 17 years and the same basic idea has been upgraded to issue a tweet to alert the entire globe.
