Can anyone recommend a nice pub in walking distance of the Casino in Sydney? It's my ill fortune to find the Casino as the venue for a get-together next weekend but I am mustering some troops for a few jars beforehand to take the edge off the awful awful place that all decent beer has forsaken that is Star City Casino.

Anywhere nice with a decent tipple on tap? I know the Harlequin but don't fancy their beers and that's the sum of my knowledge of Pyrmont and the surrounds.

I haven't been there and it is a decent walk, but perhaps the James Squire joint over in Darling Harbour?

As an employee of the house of sin I can recommend a few around the area....

The JS brewhouse thingy is just over the bridge, literally a 5 minute walk.
The Kirk on Harris has a few random beers on tap, nice decor too.

Once you are inside in complex, hit the sports theatre, it's where the most taps are, but I make no promises in terms of the prices, as far as I can tell from what I see players on the tables charged (I'm a dealer) don't expect to get any decent beer below $7

Don't know of any pubs around that area, but I do know the casino has Fat Yak on tap, so it's not all bad (if you're into that at all). If you get the right bar staff they'll charge the same for a pint as for a schooner, too ;)

Thanks all for ideas. Googled this JS brewhouse but that looks like the Casino minus the tables! Expensive and impersonal?
Will do more research on Kirk and other small pubs around there.

+1 on the JS pub... top notch beer. I've done the walk from the Casino to there... not too bad... especially when Craic is waiting

All right maybe I'll give into popular opinion and try the JS Brewhouse then onto the Casino, haven't tried either the Highwayman or the Bright Ale so I'll give em a go.

Redoak is another 5 mins into the city from the JS. Or maybe that is my beer walk talking. Could be further, I've never walked it while not on a pub crawl...

Edit: link.

I utterly hate the casino.
+2 for JS.
If the walk's a bit far, there's an irish pub underneath the casino.

Ah yes, Duffy's located in the arcade, opposite end of the complex from the hotel reception. Not bad prices, but most nights from about midnight onwards it is a casino staff only venue and staff ID must be shown to enter.

Thanks all. Ended up going to JS. They had none of their special brews available, only the regular retail ones at astronomical prices, not sure I understand why their beer is more expensive at their own venue. Anyhow I won't be going back there but appreciate everyone's input. The food was also expensive and crap!

The Brewhouses aren't owned by Lion Nathan. They are essentially franchises which have to buy the product from LN and then sell it at commercial rates. It isn't entirely surprising that the Sydney Brewhouse is pricey given the location. What is surprising is that the same high prices apply at the other ones around the country too.
