Sorry bout starting new thread, didn't want to butt in on the survey with dumb questions.
I'm a newbie to AG and I just assumed that a gentle rolling boil was what I should be going for.
After reading the boil loss survey I'm wondering if I assume wrong. Is there some reason why poeple would be boiling the bejesus out of the thing that I dont know about??? Cheers

"Boiling the bejesus out of it" is a good idea for the start of the boil to achieve a good hot break - after the hot break a steady rolling boil is only necessary.

An idea at best. A boil will achieve hot break regardless.

There are a few opinions about boil vigour, and if you have a good search you will find most of them expressed in a few threads on here.

No biggie, the search thingo here aint great though

Hey!, where the last post go?, looks like I'm talking to myself!

Hi there glaab,

I think you'll find that they aren't boiling too hard. The guys with high surface area pots are going to have a higher evaporation rate per hour than the smaller surface area pots even though they boil at the same vigour.

I've just whacked the calculation formulas in that thread if that is any help.

Thanks, Pat. I understand the greater surface area will have more evap but was wondering why there were so many bringing up how hard they boil. I think I'll just stick to a sensible gentle roll, when I take some measurements I'll add them too your thread. I think you're doing a great job bloke, all this info will be great for newbies like me. :super: Cheers

That'd be great to get your figures Glaab and thank you.

I think only one person has described their boil as vigorous. On the weekend, I'll whack a spreadsheet up and I think you'll find the average to be a gentle to medium rolling boil so stick to what you are doing :icon_cheers:

Gotta race!
