Some time before October
Or even before September the 16th.

So for an Oktoberfest lager, perhaps start thinking about now.

Maerzen was traditionally drunk at Oktoberfest and is traditionally brewed in Maerz. So if you get your scootz on (couldn't help myself with the bad pun) you could make one and call it Aprilen.

To save some Google translate Maerz = March

I once asked my German mate, when is oktoberfest? His wife was nice to me and said sometimes it starts in September.

Not sometimes. Every time. The festival starts 16 days prior to the first Sunday of October where it ends, unless the first Sunday is the 1st or 2nd of October. Then it is extended to the 3rd (German unity day). I lived in Munich for a few years.

EDIT - Einheit!
