Gryphon Brewing makes a fair point. A few years back greenie Tim Flannery - now heading the Climate Corp, or Climate Commission, or whatever the hell it's called - wrote a little tract calling, amongst other things, for a resumption of commercial whaling, basically because whales are no longer in danger of extinction (and I can't remember the details - he may also have been arguing that legal whaling would be easier to control and regulate).

There's also sometimes an anti-Japanese note that creeps into this - oh, those barbaric Japanese, if only they were like us enlightened western nations, we'll tell them what to do. I remember reading how the Japanese are typically horrified that westerners eat stuff like roast lamb - those cute widdle lambs! Yet they're not prosecuting us about that, are they?

That was my exact same criticism of the very vocal opponents of the shark drum lines, Nev.

No one gives a **** about the factory farming required for us to keep feeding our fat faces with burgers, but don't you dare kill a shark.

I'm trying to introduce as much wild/game/sustainably/ethically farmed meat into my diet as possible. A lot of roo and venison coming up!

Same here, currently going through the paces to get my gun licence so I can hunt the majority of the meat I will eat

Sir Francis Bacon?
They won't find much meat on him.

Seriously though, those Japs will be turning themselves inside out looking for a new way to **** the Southern Pacific just as they do in every other bit of salt water within reach.

The Chinese love shark fin soup.
We need sharks culled by the millions.
The Japs have got the ships sitting in port ready to roll.

Its god dam win win!

You're such fun men Dave/Ducatiboy? ;)

I'm sure the Japs wouldn't even remotely contemplate cutting the fins off live protected shark species just for profit to their old enemies even if their neighbours do this every day?

Don't believe that FAM & love our World Environmental Family to bits for their efforts towards saving the planet.

You want to come fishing. Going to book the Nisshim Maru for a few days. Should be able to get a cheap rate now its not being used.

You're eating Bambi you barbarian. How very, very dare you.

A Bambi and thumper pizza sounds pretty amazing to me.
With a light tomato/thyme sauce and homemade mozzarella and I'd be quite happy.

What ***** the **** out of me is the whole live exports debacle is totally unnecessary in the first place. We're already sending halal boxed meat to these joints. They simply don't trust us to do the job correctly. If Mc Donald's or some steakhouse chain made demands like this at their discretion, they'd be ******* pilloried, and rightly so.

RSPCA website:

Muslim countries accept Australian halal slaughter practices
It is often argued that animals must be sent live because it services particular religious requirements relating to how the animals are slaughtered. Some consumers in the Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian regions are said to prefer the importation of live animals over boxed meat because it provides them with greater confidence that Halal slaughter methods have been followed. Australia already has meat export markets in all countries it currently exports live animals to. All slaughter of cattle and sheep for the export of meat to Islamic markets is performed in accordance with Halal requirements. Australian export abattoirs are regulated by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service and are accredited to perform Halal slaughter by Islamic accreditation authorities. These arrangements already provide adequate assurances to Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian markets. - See more at: http://www.rspca.org.au/campaigns/live-export/live-export-facts#sthash.WAtkLZp1.dpuf
