my question is, do i just buy a fridgemate or similer,
and just plug it in and set what temperature i want or do i have to do something to the freezer itself.
thanks

Hi Huntsy,

It would be good if you can post a picture of what you have, for more specific answers, but here's my 2 cents....

It depends on how many kegs it can fit, and how many you want it to fit, as there is normally a compressor hump inside the freezer that will possibly sit another keg or two on it, but this normally calls for the addition of a 'collar' to be built around the top of the freezer to give the extra height needed.

Collars give the added benefit of being able to drill holes to allow for taps, hoses and sensors without the risks associated with drilling through the walls of the freezer, which may penetrate the coolant lines or electrical wires.

The gas bottle may be kept inside the kegerator, but in my setup, with a 140 litre freezer, I kept my bottle outside so that I could fit four kegs inside the kegerator instead of 3.

I am uploading some photos to Photobucket, will post them up here when they are finished.

Hi Huntsy,

I use my upright deep freezer for fermenting, with a fridgemate attached it will override the original thermostat

here a pic

works without a hitch, only turns on maybe 3-4 a day

Just plug it into your fridgemate, set your thermostat on the freezer to low and your temp on your fridgemate to whatever temp you want.
Simple as that.
As stated the fridgemate will then override the freezer thermostat.

Hope this helps

Sorry Huntsy, misunderstood you a little at first, but the Fridgemate or whatever temperature controller you use will override the thermostat on the freezer, mine has been running sweetly now for about 4 months. Just as an aside, you may wish to look over some of the threads on the pros and cons of running fans in your kegerator, it makes good reading from both sides of the argument, and can be important to consider if you decide to use a collar in your setup.

Cheers,

A collar on an upright Freezer would certainly be a little different ;)

Just being super cautious here . . .

Fridgemate require changes to the wiring of the fridge. They require cutting and re wiring of the fridgemate to the fridge

These can be fatal if not installed by those who understand electricity.

If in doubt, call a sparky.

Best to check

This is WAY incorrect.

The fridgemate is an EXTERNAL thermostat. After it is wired up, you PLUG the fridge into the female plug coming out of the fridgemate, you don't cut and chop the cord (you can, but why would you??)

Howver, that being said - If you don't understand it, don't do it.... Or call a sparky - Just thought I would try to clear it up...

Second that.

It is easy, BUT follow instructions carefully and accurately.
