I was reading HRH Prince of Wales' gardening book and he advocates
conditioning soil with copious quantities of spent hops!

Apparently in England you can back your trailer up to the local brewery and
collect a tonne of hop gunk for the garden!

I hope the korgies have been trained not to go near that part of the garden. Hops are killers to dogs, so if you have canine companions, be careful of this practice.

So does that mean I can kill off the neighbour's noisy hound with a good dose of DIPA?

Easy there Geof. I like dogs, even some noisy ones ;)

its true that cerain plants/plant matter will cause havoc to the internals of dogs and cats , however it is something few give a thought to when planting thing around the garden/house, i have some hop rhisomes at home to be planted , i dont have a dog but the though didnt even cross my mind as to the damage it could do to it if i had one ....

This chap

uses his hops a rose mulch.

Are spent hops as poisonous to dogs as new ones? And do dogs like them?
Just wondering whether the risk is as high as we think when spreading them on the
garden seems pretty widespread in the land of the corgi!

I saw an article on dogs that had died from eating hops -as far as i could tell, they ate fresh hop plugs. Spent hops or pellet hops might not be a problem, but who knows.

spent hops are more toxic to dogs than straight of the plant is what i have been lead to believe which is why my spent hops end up in the bin and not the garden, same with the grain but thats only 'cos the idiot dog likes to eat the grain! a quick search will reaveal lots about hops making dogs sick

Didn't Goatherder lose one of his goats from eating hop residue ? :(

anyway to get back on topic

are you gonna start using your hop trub on your gardens braufrau?

well I don't end up with much and it goes in the compost anyway.
But after reading that link where the guy says it fends off slugs, I thought I might
put the next lot around the broccoli.

The backyard is dog proof.

I use my spent hops and grain as mulch.

And as a by product it appears as animal food as well. Something is eating it at any rate.

HRH the Prince of Wales, or at least someone on his behalf, makes some pretty tasty beers too.

Had the Duchy Originals when I was over there last year and the Original Ale, made by Wychwood I believe, is a top bottled ale.
