Hi, just wondering if iodophor degrades when exposed to light and looses it sanitising properties? The reason is i want to use it in a spray gun for ease of use but unsure if i should make it up fresh every time. I'd prefer not to as it'll be a huge waste.

I use it in my spray gun , bloke...
AFAIK , as long as its not subject to air , its still fine to use ( and still that amber colour )
Once it is sprayed ( and exposed to air) it will loose its colour...
Contact time is plus 2 min for successful sanitisation...
A spray bottle usually lasts me 2 or 3 brews inc doing everything from kegs to fermentors , to cubes...
Using the spray bottle , my last bottle of iodopher lasted me 18 months....
Cheers

Yep reckon it does, once it loses the yellow colour it is cactus. Mine lasts about 2 days maximum in a plastic bottle.

Yes it is a waste I make up 10litres at a time for sanatising bottles in a large bucket but it is only 10ml of Iodophor concentrate.

Actually I'm pretty sure contact time required is less than 2 minutes. It's just that the US food & safety that regulates it has a minimum of 2 minutes on all their tests.

Just make up less. I bought a 250ml bottle of iodophor over a year ago now and its still a quarter full, even though i've given a fair bit away.

When i first got it i didn't realise it went off so i'd make up a litre bottle and spray it when needed. After i found out it goes off I bought a 1ml syringe for those days when i only need a 100ml of sanitiser made up.

On brewday i'll make 5 litres of sanitiser so i can give everything a little splash. Its a little wasteful but i think i can afford $7 every year and a half.

iodophor = best kept secret to lazy brewing....ever!

Easy as....cheap....cut sanitizing corners left, right and centre.

Bought 1 litre from ESB 5 years ago and have not had an infection problem since.

(Well not in my beer anyway)

Pretty sure I read 30 seconds contact is all that is needed.

I switch between starsan and idophor.... I love idophor, I make up 5l on brew day so only 5mlof idophor is used and fill up my small spray bottle, so I can soak my no chill cube and spray utensiles etc.... Then if I have a starter ready it goes into a cleaned fermenter, if not ill ju as t make up a new batch when I transfer to the fermenter.

All you blokes who have it loosing its colour in the spray bottle ?
I have never had it loose any colour....
Once its dispensed...sure...but in the bottle no...
Thats my experience

At 5ml (even less if you got a plastic syringe used to measuring small amounts of medicine..) a use I don't really see the point of reusing...

i find it looses colour when left out in sunlight
being lazy and not putting my shit away after a brew 2 days later the iodophor in the spray bottle was very pale. the other one that i keep in the shed hasnt lost any colour

That's starsan, 5 star did a show and the majority of the kill is done in the first 30 secs, however they recommend 3 minutes to ensure you 99.9% of the nasties. Iodophor needs 10 minutes to get the same kill rate however you will get a large kill rate in under 5 minutes.

something to watch out for is that iodophor stains plastic after awhile. Which isn't really a concern BUT my spray bottle iodophor always looks browner than it actually is from the outside, so ometimes its hard to tell if its spent. Thats why i make it up fresh.

I use Iodophor exclusively. I always use it fresh and then tip it. Its cheap and I have had no infection worries since using it.

If I were you I would use it fresh. Make it up each brew day and then discard. For the extra 20c it will cost you to make a fresh batch why oh friken why would you risk it?

Stick with this stuff though - its great.

Someone told me that they sell it even cheaper at rural supply stores, not sure how big of a bottle you have to buy but i'll check it out next time i'm in there.

IDYNE milking machine sanitiser I got 5l for $40 a few years ago 16ml to 10l = 3125L 1.28cents a litre.
