Im running out of no-rinse Iodine solution. It wasnt Iodophor - just concentrated Iodine - the stuff vets use.

When I brought the litre I have I noticed that the joint I got it from had Iodophor (the one with the phosporic acid in it - badged as Iodoform from memory) in 20L drums. They wouldnt sell it by the litre. It was dairy flush solution - definitely with the phosphoric surfactant (sp?)

I'm happy to buy 20L and 20 X 1L bottle - if there was any one in Perth who would be keen on some - I will take 4 L - should last me for ever.

From memory it was about $120 for 20L - plus GST plus say $1 for a bottle - I make no profit.

As an aside I have been using 50ml per 5 litres - as a general rule - is this right??? - the bottle is of no help - aimed at vets sterilising wounds - i think they use it neat.

PM me or reply if anyone in Perth is keen

Cheers

RM

Edit - 50 ml per 5 litres - duh

hhhmmmm...
sounds bastard well interesting Roger, I'll be in it, why not come along to GL's brewday on saturday and canvas some interest.

I am in Perth on Saturday - where abouts is GL's?? - keen to meet some of the local fraternity.

PM sent to Roger re meetup Saturday, and put me down for 2 bottles if you decide to go ahead.

The Iodophor I've got doesn't have a concentration that directly relates.
Says Dilute 1:1000 to give 12.5ppm solution, which means 10mL per litre, well short of the 50mL you claim to be using...but then maybe it's a different initial concentration
Sticker on the bottle claims to be from www.esbeer.com.au
I'd be interested in a bottle or two if it's the same kinda thing.
But hopefully I'll see you at GL's brew day anyway :D

Definitely keen for at least 1 bottle, I'm running low on phosphoric from the last bulk buy.

Am attempting to arrange leave pass from SWMBO.

Will ring this place I got the last lot of Iodine from and have details etc... Im pretty sure I worked it out at about $7.50 per litre bottled - assuming they will sell me empty bottles.

May even be able to pick it up saturday morning if they are open.

Cheers

just make sure the form in iodoform doesnt stand for formaldehyde or something similar!

If this is in it aswell i dont tihnk it would be a non rinse sterilizer.

Ash: I doubt it has formaldehyde, since it is intended for use on dairy gear.

Edit : I note that I am now Krausen - indeed - feeling very crusty this morning.

Sorry mika_lika, you've calculated you dilution wrong. You've stated a 1:100 dilution instead of the 1:1000 you quoted.

1:1000 is the proper dilution for iodophor which gives you a final conc of 12.5ppm available iodine. This works out to be 1ml per litre, not 10ml.

So Roger, you've been using 50X too much iodine (assuming the straight stuff you've been using is the same or similar conc as iodophor).

FWIW, to conserve your iodophor just make up a litre or two for your fermenter and then shake it around and let it sit for a few minutes and then shake again. No need to fill your fermenter full of sanitizer. The surfectant foams a bit and helps cover the sides and a little goes a long way. When diluted properly the solution is only just brown, very faintly.

The stuff I have used is called Alpha Larval Agri LF-12, and here is a snippit of a post I made ages ago about it:

"To save on iodophor usage I only use 1-2L of sanitiser to sanitise my fermenter on brew day. If your fermenter is clean then it shouldn't be hard to sanitise. I put 1-2L of water plus 1-2mls of iodophor then routinely shake the hell out of my fermenter every 5 mins or so to splash the solution around. This has been my standard procedure for the last probably 10-15 brews and it's never caused me any trouble with infection. It makes the iodophor solution go a long, long way.

If you want to do a bulk buy of the solution you can buy it in a 25L cube for about $125 (=$5/L) and is sold under the name of Alfa Laval Agri LF12 Milking Machine Sanitiser. The Active constituents are: 12gm/L available Iodine, 252 gm/lL phosphoric acid. It's a low foaming acid dairy sanitiser. Probably more easily accessed in a rural setting but you should be able to find a distributor in the city somewhere."

See the thread here: http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/inde...mode=linearplus

Hope it helps. Great stuff. A litre lasts ages.

Cheers, Justin

Roger,

I won't be able to make it on Sat but I'd definitely take 2 and I'm sure Big Al will grab a couple also...

I edited the original post this morning after reading it - 50 ml to 5L is what I have been using. Still 10 X more than 1:1000.

Its wasnt Iodophor - just betadine rebadged - not sure of the difference in iodine conc.

Anyway - have had no infections and my beer doenst smell like a hospital ward. So thats lucky.

No worries mate. At 50mls per litre you would have been chewing through the stuff that's for sure. Anyway, good luck in getting the new drum and some people to split it with.

Thanks for the offer Roger - a great find !

I'm up for 2 bottles.

Hi Roger,

Good work - I'd be up for 2 bottles if possible? Happy to come pick it up from you when it's ready, and drop any other orders off in the Bayswater region if required?

Cheers...

Righto

The active ingredients are Iodine @ 20g/l and Phosphoric acid @ 160 g/l. Low foaming dairy sanitiser.

They will sell me the empty 1L bottles individually - here is the deal.

20L Drum of Iodoform @ 110 + GST
20 Black Plastic Bottles @ 1.40 + GST ea

works out at $ 7.59 per bottle rounded up to $8 to make the payment side of things easier.

So far I have

Me - 2 Bottles (dont think I need 4 bottles now I will be using 10 x LESS than at present)
Lupulin Boy - 2 Bottles
Chillamagilla - 1 Bottle
Asher - 2 Bottles
Big Al - 2 Bottles (maybe)
Goat - 2 Bottles
Guest Lurker - 2 Bottles
Vlad the Impaler - ?

Leaving 5 or 6 - depending upon how much Vlad wants.

So its a goer - I will bring everything to GL's tomorrow -

Cheers

RM

Roger I will grab a bottle as well if there is some left. I wont ba able to make it tomorrow but can collect it at the next WCB meet if GL is going to be there. Happy to DD the $$ to your account if you send me the details.

Thanks
Jason

Sterling work Roger, very impressive. To save hassles, I can buy all spare bottles off you and you can leave them at my place. I can then onsell them from here or distribute them through West Coast Brewers meetings etc. Of course, unlike your generous self, I charge a handling fee, and people will save about $70 a bottle by getting them directly from you on the day.
