Was at a local pub waiting to see the John Spencer Blues Explosion (who rocked out), and saw the Indian Ocean Brewery range of beers on tap. Was keen to try these, so got myself and my mate a pint of the IPA (in a plastic cup mind you) and struggled to finish it. My mate was also similarly disgusted and disappointed.

Colour was what you would expect, the head started off thick / compact and quickly settled to a thin rim at the edge of the cup (might be a problem with using plastic, not sure). There was almost no hop aroma, but a slight malt aroma was present. Not encouraging but not the end of the world. The taste left me struggling to swallow with a puckering / sour taste with a metallic / blood edge to it. Not sure if it infection / poor brewing water or both. It was bloody awful.

Quickly went and got a JSGA and couldn't bring myself to try any of the other Indian Ocean Brewery offerings.

Looking on their website, they don't have the IPA listed on their range, so maybe this was a very very old keg.

Will still take a lot of encouragment or someone else on here to convince me to try another of their brews.

They are hit and miss, but I've had some pretty good beers at their brewery in mindarie. Remember the bohemian pils being really good. And a cherry bock a few years back.

My guess (backed up by a quick search) is that it's an English IPA rather than an American - more malt forward than overly hoppy, so perhaps it's somewhat down to expectations and personal tastes. Dark malts can lead to metallic tastes if not used in the right balance. Could also be poor line cleaning. Plastic cups can also add their own flavours, as can failing to purge a line that hasn't been used too frequently.

I haven't tried it myself, but I'll keep an eye out and give a second opinion if I manage to find it.

If you were at the Rosey it is just and English Pale Ale, the Indian in their name tends to confuse people. It tastes good sometimes, but other times its barely drinkable, not many people actually order it (im down there a lot) and could have been old beer in the lines maybe.... How was John Spencer? I actually forgot all about him coming :(

Yep was at the Rosemount, so obviously got mixed up with the tap label. I imagine if not many folks are drinking it, and we were at the outside bar area which makes for a long line back to the keg, then probably old beer in the lines looks the culprit.

John Spencer were awesome, mainly played tunes off the Orange and other early albumns. Nice and personal atmosphere inside, but the mixing of his vocals left a bit to be desired. Given they played the east coast the previous night and are back out there tonight they work hard for their money.
