I'm looking to make an IPA and i'm roughly copying the recipe here http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/inde...amp;recipe=1300 modifying it for extract of course

When I throw the hop schedule (replacing Saaz with Willamette) into the Kit and Extract Beer Designer spreadsheet I get an IBU of 102 (and I wasn't even able to include ALL the hops due to space restrictions) yet the recipe says the IBU was 66.

Is this going to be a ridiculously over-hopped monster? Or am I doing something wrong? Oh and is willamette ok to sub with Saaz, or do they behave completely differently in the boil?

Willamette 90g @ 60min
Galaxy 25g @ 55min
Cascade 20g @ 20min
Galaxy 10g @ 10min
Cascade 10G @ 10min
Galaxy 10g @ 5min

I like hoppy beers, but I don't want it to blow my socks off with harsh hoppy character.

You're doing extract so I'm assuming a partial boil which will be topped up with water? The IBU measurement will be for the boil which will then be diluted out.

That's my guess (unless spreadsheet has already taken this into account).

90 grams of willamette @ 60 minutes looks far to much. I calculate that as about 66 IBUs alone (depending on exact AA, I used 5%, boil size, gravity etc for an exact amount)

EDIT: Depends if you're doing a double batch. I didn't see that in the recipe DB intially. Could be OK if doing 40L or more

What's the aa of your willamette? The saaz in the recipe is only 3.5%. The recipe is also a 40L batch. What size is yours?

Yeah that's what I thought, but the original recipe is..

85 g Saaz (Czech) (Pellets, 3.5 AA%, 60 mins)
25 g Galaxy (Pellets, 15.0 AA%, 55 mins)
20 g Cascade (Pellets, 8.4 AA%, 50 mins)
10 g Cascade (Pellets, 6.0 AA%, 10 mins)
10 g Galaxy (Pellets, 15.0 AA%, 10 mins)
10 g Galaxy (Pellets, 15.0 AA%, 5 mins)
10 g Cascade (Pellets, 6.0 AA%, 5 mins)
50 g Cascade (Pellets, 6.0 AA%, 0 mins)
50 g Galaxy (Pellets, 15.0 AA%, 0 mins)

Which is just an insane amount more hops than I even put into the spreadsheet

[edit] AHHA! You nailed it, it's for a 40L batch, i didn't see that on the original recipe.

So would it be appropriate to halve all the hops in the schedule?
