For a quick, easy and reasonable kit brew, I also back the 3kg kits. Add nothing but water.

Brew today, bottle in a week and will be drinking okay by 12 August. Open a bottle the day before and make sure it's good.

I would use an Safale yeast from your homebrew shop for a few more bucks.

what did you end up putting down djfez67

did it explode out of the firmenter or is that just me?

cheers

what can i add to a coopers kit of stout to make it sweeter

so far the recipe i have got off ABH

is

1x coopers stout tin
500g of DME
300g of brown sugar
300g of licorice
25g of fuggles hopps

i was thinking of adding lactose but a few have warned on other topics about using it

Gonzo,

Drop the sugar. Sugar makes it drier.

Use more extract. At least a kg will give you a fuller bodied and slightly sweeter stout. Try 2kg maybe.

Steep about 250g of chocolate malt (ample instructions about this on AHB) and this will also add body and slight sweetness.

Those three things would give you a sweeter stout. I've never used lactose but have read the same warnings as you. I personally would drop the liquorice; I just don't reckon it's an ingredient in beer, despite what some recipes might say.

And you don't need finishing hops in a stout so you could drop the fuggles, but if you want some nice hops aroma, fuggles will work fine and you could even double that amount, or more if you really want some kick.

i agree...

use light malt extract to the gravity needed and brew with a low attenuation yeast to leave lots of residual sugars in the beer.

S-04 would work well

cheers
