I sets you thinking about how much industry pigs out on every day. Example while I'm sure Coca Cola Amatil etc employ thousands it's worth noting (or so I've heard) that out of every 1 litre of Coca Cola manufactured they consume 1.5 litres of water in it's production.

We home users are a pimple on the arse. Industry is the locust.

If you direct the water output from your chiller into a washing machine, you'll be amazed just how much water an average laundry load uses compared to chilling a brew.

For some reason i was looking at washing machines on the weekend. I saw one 7kg front loader rated at 62L for an entire cycle. 150-200L was the rated usage on some of the crappier models.

Like grey water recycling for washing, brewers should work on 'amber water' recycling systems!

wow - I never expected to get some may replies and start a political debate! Awesome!

:D

I've been doing my research, and found a water saver shower head that is rated at 7.5L/min and gives a shower that feels the same as normal by injecting each water drop with air!

I just did the calculations, and based on two people showering for 5 minutes per day, it will save 175L per day! As an added bonus, because less hot water is used, it saves $0.35 per day in electricity! It costs $120, but on power saving alone it ispaid for in 340 days. Let alone being able to easily justify my brewing!

I'm considering organising a bulk buy of these for friends/collegues - anyone interested? It would be brisbane based....

My mother just told me her toploader uses 300l / wash !
I almost fell on the floor.
She *buckets* all of it onto the garden!!

I remember reading once that breweries typically use 6-10 litres of water for every litre of beer they produce.
I must've read the same thing because I had the same impression. But when I did a tour at Coopers I was told their ratio was 1.9:1. When I posted on another site about how that impressed me, I was told that their ratio was about industry standard. I would guess that for any decent-sized brewery the energy savings make a water-efficient setup financially worthwhile.

A friend of mine works for Tooheys, I can't remember the exact figure but he said the "waste"
thousands of litres every brew to wash lines, kettles etc.
Usage is is in the high hundreds if not millions of litres a week
