Looking at AG brewing - Do people have large supples of different hops and grains, or do you order say from Craftbrewer the exact amounts pre packed as per the recipe in Beer smith

Some people order as needed....... some keep large stocks.

I keep 25 KG bags of pilsner, ale, vienna, munich and wheat malts on hand and have about 25 different specialty malts in amounts from 1 to 5 KG.

I have my own large motorised grain mill and use 10 to 12 kg per batch though.

all that grain doesnt last long when i get in abd brew 200 liters of beer to fill my kegs.

If you plan to buy grain pre-cracked, get it as required, if you buy it un-cracked it will last for over a year no problems if you store it corectly.

hops........... i have about 20 different ones in the fridge.

once again. stored corectly they last ages.

Start out with what you need to make what you want to brew and build on it...... you will slowly get the feel.... and the storage capacity for it.

cheers

Ross wil;l supply grain in any size you want basically. He will even crack it for you.

His hops are generally sold in 90 or 450gm packs. 90 Gm is usually enough for 1 or 2 brews depending on the beer and AA% of the hops.

Most homebrew shops will make up an order for you either in small quantities for a recipe or in bulk, for storage. When I started partial mashing, my order would look something like this:

5kg Pale Ale Malt
5Kg Pilsner malt
1kg light crystal
1kg dark crystal
500g chocolate
500g roasted malt
500g roasted barley
20Kg Dry Malt extract

These days I buy base malt in 25 or 50kg bags, things like munich and wheat by the half-sack (12.5kg) and specialties by the kilo or more.

Of course, it varies according to what I plan to brew. Like Tony said, once you get into it, you get a feel for what you need and in what quantities.

Living in the Northern Territory and not having a ready supply of grain, I just order from Craftbrewer. I find that orders to do an all grain brew of about 23 litres are relatively easy to obtain.

I place an order with whatever grain bill I require and forward it onto Ross who cracks it and pakages it for me and sends it. When it arrives I just tip it into the Mash Tun.

I would recommend this to anyone.

***Unashamed plug***

Where's my brown paper bag full of money Ross?

Oh, and www.craftbrewer.com.au

Hey Reece......

you wont make any friends on here with that bottle of VB to your name :p

Better change it before the AHB police see it.

hehehehehe

AG brewer in the allice hey............ we are bloody well everywhere.

Welcome aboard mate.

Oh and welcome to MD too :)

cheers

If your starting out, i would suggest getting each order as you brew it. Like Tony said you would have to get a mill first if you went for buying bulk un-cracked sacks.

I know, I know, but it is a reference to Alice Springs. It is almost like a magical totem to some people here. I know this is going off topic but...

I went to the local bottle-o last night and found that a 6-pack of VB cost $15 and a six-pack of Becks cost $14.50. I was amazed.

I will, however, endevour to find a more appropriate Avatar (is that what they are called?) at some stage. Perhaps a XXXX or maybe a Toohey's New can, bugger it, I may even just put on a cask of wine. Stuff the AHB Police!!!!

I'm kidding, sorry, I will change it, but at my lesiure.

Cheers,

Reece

I used to live in Moree in Northern NSW.............. i know what you mean mate B)

Leave it there......... i was having a poke :).... its a good piss take!

cheers

Ive been doing ag for about 8 months and i still order what i need straigt from craftbrewer and he craks it and vacum seals it as well. To easy.

I will one day like to store large abount like some of the others but have to wait for a grain mill and at the moment the $$$ dont realy help as i would like a good mill that should last me forever. As long as i dont poke coat hangers into it. :p

Start small you got all the time in the world.

When I first stared I got small supplied on a brew by brew basis from my local HB store... later I bulk bought 25kg sacks through a brew club order...

Properly stored grain can last up to a year and it is great having some on hand so you can be creative....
