You dont need to answer this Dr Smurto as I know you are flat out packing hops ect. But as I have never grown hops before I am pumped to give it a crack. So have I got it right. You plant the little hop rhizome after last frost, say August here in Newcastle. I will be starting them in a pot for the first season while we build out new home. Anyway, they grow, I train 2 bines up a rope to a 3m high horizontal post, then run some horizontal wires out from that? then the produce the goods and I harvest in April. Then do I leave the vine or bines alone until they start to brown? then do I cut it right back to the ground? If so, does that mean all the photos I have seen of huge hop plants, they grew like that in one summer?

Cool, so its the root ball that holds all the power for next seasons growth. So as long as I dont dig up the root ball and cut it all away and replant (thats would be like starting season 1 angain) it should take off like a frog in a sock. Sounds like fun. Might work the two rhizomes into a mid summer canopy over the new chick coop.Correct on all counts.
You will only get limited hop flowers if any in the first season growing, but after that, look out!
PM'd. Anyone tried to grow Victoria variety in Qld yet?
sent a PM regarding chinook.
Cheers mate!
I grew Victoria and Cascade on the Sunshine Coast this season, in a very lazy fashion and harvested enough for 4 brews.
I brought the rhizomes up from the Victorian Coast where I harvested a couple of Kgs in my first year, was crazy the amount of hops I had. Even had my then 6yo Girl picking with me.
I'm going to put some more effort in this coming season, with soil condition works underway already (Chook and Alpaca Poo) dug in and mulched in the new growing patch.
Victoria is now also SOLD out.
Plenty of Chinook remaining.
