Has anyone ever used Bushells coffee/chickory essence in a recipe? Considering using some in a strong u.s. style amber for some depth of flavour Comments appreciated :icon_cheers:

Coffee is the last thing I think of when I think of American Ambers, just IMO, but I don't think it would go well at all, especially if you're going to use typical US Amber hops.

Caramel or even slightly burnt caramel flavours would be much more appropriate I think.

Try and get this flavour from grains, i.e cara-amber crystals etc.

Cheers SJ

HA!
I remember that stuff.
I can see why you might want to put that in there, but maybe , this time, brew the beer to completeion and then just put an eye dropper amount in each beer till you work out IF and how much you want in there.

Exactly my plan :icon_cheers: It's only an american-ish amber. a bit freestyle,3.5kg munich1,2.5 kg marris otter,100g roast barley, hops to be decided yet.A cupboard clean out and thats what i had +amarillo, cascade, horizon, simcoe SO-5.So it's gonna be yank style i reckon.Tasted it and it's powerful stuff, maybe in another style i think, but i can see some potential in it.Worth a try on a small scale at the least :beerbang:

Toper1, Here's my imperial amber ale thingy. From memory it got criticised in the Castle Hill comp for being too sweet (too much crystal), but it's great all the same.
