So I've put down 2 different kits and one thing I noticed is that the bottled product seems to be flat. My question is, Is there an infection happening somewhere (in the fermenter or the bottle), is the yeast dieing in the bottling process or is that just par for the course?

Thanks in advance.

How long do you leave the beer in the bottle before opening?
What temp are you leaving the bottles at?
How do you carb the bottles? Cabonation drops? Sugar? Dex?

My last batch goes flat after 10 minutes or so, and is not that fizzy even when I just open the bottle. For this batch I couldn't get my usual carbonation drops and bought a different brand (can't remember the name). It's still supposed to be 2 drops per 750ml bottle, however they were smaller than my usual ones. So I am blaming my last batch's lack of carbonation on the new drops that I used........ although could just be coincidence.

Hughezy,

Sounds more like the caps aren't sealed up and your losing carbonation.......?? Hand capper.

I had this on my first ever brew.....bought a bench capper after that. :D

If your bottling in plastic....then something else is going on.

AussieJosh: I leave the beer for 2 weeks min at room temp and I bottle with white table sugar

PocketBeers: I think I am using a bench capper I will post pics to clarify and I bottle with glass. Sorry camera has no juice so I had to draw it on paint >.<. That's a very basic drawing of the capper I use.

Sounds like the caps arnt sealed!? Or you may not be adding enough sugar? try using diffrent kinds of bottles, Try storing the bottles at least 18c for two weeks at the very min! Also you may have more luck with Carb drops??

Good Luck!

Well I can't find anything wrong with the bottles or the caps and I use a teaspoon of sugar per tallie. I store them under my computer atm it keeps a fairly constant temp. With the carb drops would there be a chance of over carbing the bottles with the yeast still present in the beer?

Is your beer actually flat or just looks that way due to bad head retention or glass detergents.

Hold a mouth full on your tongue for a few seconds and you should feel the carbonation stinging.

Also when you pour your flat beer down the sink you will see straight away if its flat or not. :)
